Lush Coconut Deodorant Powder
Advantages: Absolutely flippin' gorgeous! Plus SOME ability to counteract sweaty pits.
Disadvantages: I said only SOME...
When I ran out of my Jason Tea Tree Oil deodorant, I baulked at the price of £4.99 in my local healthshop, so I decided to try and find another "alternative" deodorant elsewhere - lured, as ever, by the gorgeous scents of Lush. I specifically wanted to try something with cornstarch in it, as I have found (with the Jason deodorant) that this does have some ability to absorb moisture. This, combined with Neal's Yard's deodorant spray (please see my review on this), would hopefully give me a good balance between moisture control and, er, scent regulation, for want of a better phrase.
Does it work? To some extent... I've found myself wanting to re-apply (on a hot and muggy day, mind) which is an awkward thing to do, being in powder form. There is, however, some control of the, er, smell issue, too, which I was not expecting (Jason's deo didn't fare so well on that aspect).
Still, the scent is so gorgeous, I hardly minded wanting to top up. The glorious blend of soft, soft coconut lusciousness with just a tiny hint of spice is summarised nicely by the ingredients (note 4 different extracts of coconut!):
Cornstarch, tapioca flour, magnesium carbonate, perfume, powdered coconut milk, coconut oil, grated coconut cream, dessicated coconut, benzoin resinoid and vertivert oil.
There is, of course, the potential added annoyance of white marks on your clothes, but this only became an issue on the day I wore a close-fitting summer top. Otherwise, I would say that it's just not thick enough to rub off on looser-fitting tops.
All in all, it depends on how swayed you are by a fabulously beautiful scent (and just how stinky you are! - sorry to say it, meat eaters, but I have never smelled so sweet - okay, let's call it "relatively neutral" - since becoming vegetarian!) It's not hugely effective, but folks, you have to lower your expectations when you switch to a natural deodorant and just do what you can (ie apply regularly and combine with an anti-bacterial spray like Neal's Yard's). The bottom line is, you're not artificially blocking your pores up with aluminium and you'll know FOR SURE that you won't be developing cancer or Alzeimer's because of this particular daily habit.
The information is out there and the choice is yours!
