For some bazaar reason I tend to get chosen to trial a lot of deodorants through survey sites, this is great for me as I love to experiment with different brands and products, plus I love getting a freebie. A few months ago I was sent this Nivea Double Effect Violet Senses to try which I am reviewing today.
Niveas Double Effect Violet Senses comes in a rather large 250ml aluminium can with a spray nozzle on top. The brand logo and product name are clearly displayed on the front along with some pictures of purple violets. The bottle is violet in colour and looks quite nice upon my dressing table, but its large size means it can be cumbersome, its certainly not one you can slip in your handbag.
General information is given on the back including ingredients, warnings and directions for use. No use by date is given.
Nivea claim that this is a double effect deodorant, not only will it protect against perspiration for 48 hours but it will keep underarms smooth. The product has been dermatologically trusted, it contains no alcohol
The deodorant smells quite nice, slightly floral but fresh and clean. The fragrance isn't long lasting and disappears soon after application, this is fine by me as I find that strong deodorants can clash with perfumes and body sprays.
When I spray this deodorant under my arms and look in the mirror I can see my underarms look very sticky, wet and white. As with all deodorants a little waiting time is required before dressing, but with this one I wait... and I wait... and I wait some more and still the deodorant does not dry on my skin. I have tried using less, but this doesn't seem to make a huge amount of difference. A few times I have used this deodorant in a rush, waited five minutes before getting dressed to discover awful white marks on my clothes. I have actually had to throw away a few tops because the white marks simply wouldn't come out no matter how many times I put them through the wash.
Nivea claim that this product gives 48 hour protection against perspiration. Now, i don't go less that 24 hours without showering, but I can say that the deodorant doesn't even protect for this long. I also cant say I noticed my underarms were any softer or smoother.
I have around half of this bottle left, its not one I use on a regular basis but I just hate to throw things away (even if they were free) so I only really use it around the house, or if I am just popping to the corner shop and want a quick freshen up. It does not offer me enough protection for me to use it if I know I will be out all day, and I certainly do not use it anywhere near my favourite black tops or dresses.
A few days ago I was shopping in Super drug and noticed this Nivea Double Effect Violet Senses on their shelves, its full price being £3.29. I find this to be rather expensive for a deodorant, especially considering how terrible it actually is.
Unfortunately I can only give this Nivea Double Effect Violet Senses 1 Dooyoo star out of 5, it smells nice but thats the only good thing I can say about it.
This is the worst deodorant I have ever used in my entire life - and I've used a few. It takes for ever to dry and leaves you feeling wet and sticky for ages. It goes into wet lumps under your arms and if you put your top on before it dries you get white powder on your clothes. IT IS ABSOLUTELY AWFUL!!
I was in Boots recently and came across this deodorant on a buy one, get one free offer. I decided to pick it up because it looked really pretty and girly and I had a little spray of it in the shops and it smelled really nice.
Nivea Double Effect Violet Senses Anti-Perspirant Spray advertises 24 hour protection on its packaging, it also makes claims like 'smoother underarms' and claims to have no alcohol in it.
The packaging is very eye catching, it is a pink/purple colour and stands out nicely on the shelves.
This spray has a lovely scent to it, it isn't too empowering and is slightly musky, I can see why it is named violet as it does remind me of violets when I smell it. It is a really nice change to anti perspirants that smell like talc and I felt really good when I first applied it.
This spray is really easy to apply, you just spray it on like any other spray. I found that when I applied this deodorant it didn't leave any white marks on my skin or clothes.
Unfortunately, this deodorant does live up to the challenge of keeping me fresh and clean smelling throughout the day.
When first applied I smell wonderful, though as the day goes on, I notice that I am not getting the protection that I need. I would say by the end of my working day, I notice myself and my clothes smelling rather stale, which is really disappointing, as I really loved the look of this product.
Price and Availability
You can buy this deodorant in Boots for around £2,I think that this is a little pricey for a 150ml spray, as I usually would buy ones that are in around the £1 mark. I decided to pick this spray up as it was on offer, however even on offer it does not seem worth the money to me, as the results from it weren't that great.
I don't think I would buy this deodorant again, it smells nice in the beginning, but as the day wears on, it wears off and it does not protect well against perspiration. Also it isn't the cheapest deodorant on the shelves at the moment. Overall I would give this spray 2 out of 5 stars. I think I will stick to the Vaseline Deodorant I usually use in future.

I work in a very busy job and do alot of exercise. I grabbed this recently as I like the sound of the smell and the idea that it was active and fragrant for 24hrs.
The spray wasn't particularly strong but seemed sufficient when I put it on. I found the fragrance over sweet and scentier than something I would usually wear. Initially I felt quite nice and fresh but as soon as I started moving I felt sticky and sweaty, and the fragrance rapidly wore off. I did try it on several occasions as the first day I used it was shockingly warm, but it didn't appear to cope any better. I found I was needing to reapply hourly at work and that is not something I am used to.
The final straw was when I was out and wearing a black top. I sprayed some on to refresh and ended up with white flakes down my top. Severely unimpressed and not something I would expect from Nivea.
The only dual effect this had for me was making me feel sticky and smelly.
I have tried many different deodorants as I struggle to find one which keeps to its promises of keeping you fresh and fragrant throughout the hot summer days. I saw this one on an offer in the supermarket so decided to give it a try.
Appearance and Smell
The deodorant has a very eye catching design on the tin; it is different to most other ranges on sale. The pink/purple colour scheme gives you a good idea of the floral smells of the product. When spraying the deodorant it has a very distinct floral smell, which is still evident at the end of the day, as strong as it was when applied in the morning.
When spraying it does create quite a cloud of mist, but it does leave you and the room smelling lovely. I found that I applied quite a lot of deodorant, but that is the same with all types I use. I felt as I went through the day it kept me smelling clean and fresh, but I did feel the hotter I got the damper I felt, and then became worried about the freshness. However, I was pleasantly surprised as the smell never once faltered and I was left smelling fresh all day.
I feel I have tried other deodorants that kept me drier throughout the day, but none that have left me smelling as fresh. The smell of this deodorant, and its staying power throughout the day is the main selling feature of this deodorant. One bonus for this is the fact that it does also leave your underarms feeling a lot softer than they had been before using the product. I found that after using this product for a while, and shaving, my underarms felt softer and more nourished, than they did previously.
This is a good product for someone looking for a deodorant which has staying power to allow them to feel fresh smelling throughout the day, with the added bonus of having soft underarms.
I bought this deodorant after seeing it on offer whilst queuing in Superdrug to pay for my shopping. What can I say, I am a marketer's dream. It was on offer for £1, and I had actually tried a miniature version during a recent stay at a friend's house when I forgot to take deodorant, so I snapped this up while it was on offer. A 250ml currently retails for around £1.60 at full price.
If I'm honest, I wasn't too bothered about the claims this product made: "double effect" (what does that actually mean?), "violet senses" (it smells of violets then?) and "avocado extract" (it moisturises too? ). I just knew, having tried it previously at my friend's house, that I liked the smell. However, when I started using this, I realised it was actually a bit more than a nice smelling deodorant, and also fulfils other purposes, such as moisturising the underarm area, and in doing so allowing you to get a closer and more comfortable underarm shave.
So, is this true? Well, firstly lets talk about its primary function, being to stop me smelling all day. The deodorant claims to last for 24 hours, however personally I tend to apply this in the morning before work, and then when I get home to freshen up. Sometimes I feel the need to re-shower when I get home, so I wouldn't say this leaves me feeling particularly fresh for long periods. That said, I do a lot of working to and from work, and our office seems to be ridiculously warm considering we're not actually seeing any sun at the moment, so I'm not sure any deodorant would be expected to last for 24 hours. By the time I get home, I just feel the need to freshen up, but I don't think that's any reflection of this product. Unless you're sat on your backside not moving all day, it's never going to give 24 hour freshness.
As for the moisturising claims, well I'm not one for examining my underams on a regular basis, but I've noticed I have less stinging from this aerosol than others, so I don't get those horrible red bumps you sometimes get after applying. They do seem in better condition, although I'm not sure how "moisturised" your underarms can be when you shave them every day (ok, every other day, we're all friends on here).
I could try to describe the smell, but I'm not the best at this kind of thing. I think it's sufficient to say it smells flowery and pleasant (although I'm not sure it smells of violets as such), without smelling like talc or powdery like some deodorants can. I can usually smell it on myself all day, even if I start sweating a bit it seems to make the smell of the deodorant stronger rather than making me smell of sweat. If that makes sense.
This deodorant is dermatologically approved, and contains no alcohol or colourants. This probably goes some way to explaining why it feels so gentle on the underarm area, and is much kinder to the skin in this area. I would recommend this deodorant as I have found it to be pleasant smelling, long lasting, and gentle on my underarms.

When I was shopping in a local branch of Tesco recently, I noticed that several anti-perspirant sprays from the well-known 'Nivea' brand were on a special offer price of only £1, and as I knew I was running out of such products at home, I decided to buy a couple of the sprays on this occasion to replenish my little stockpile at home.
One of the products that I bought was the "Nivea Double Effect Violet Senses" anti-perspirant deodorant, which cost me only £1 for the 150ml aerosol can. I thought this offered good value for an anti-perspirant product from such a well known - and trusted - brand as Nivea. It is worth noting that the normal price for the product is around the £2 mark.
I thought instantly that the product looked to be quite feminine, especially as the metal canister is a sort of pale lilac-coloured can, and there is a matching lilac plastic cap on top of the can. A lot of the print and wording on the product has been done in shades of purple and lilac, so there is no mistaking the fact that this product is aimed at the female market.
I found this was the case where the fragrance of the product was concerned too. The initial aroma of the anti-perspirant was not difficult to notice and I found it was quite intense. The first scent that I caught in the overall aroma was a kind of 'soap-like' fragrance that had a sort of 'powdery' quality, and I found it reminded me of a talcum powder product or something similar. I thought too that the fragrance was quite sweet, although I didn't find it to be sickly or over-powering as a result, and I thought that the sweetness was only evident behind the more robust, initial, soap-like fragrance. I will admit to feeling quite relived that the product's fragrance had no 'floral' or 'musky' type element to it as I am not a fan of scents such as these.
The product is one that I found was very easy to use. All I had to do is remove the plastic cap from the top of the can and press lightly on the purple-coloured nozzle/button situated here. Immediately after doing so, a generous spray of the product is dispensed from the canister. I have to admit to having a small niggle with the product on this point: I find that the spray dispensed from the canister is not at all light or delicate, and I find that a little too much of the product is dispensed at any one time, so I feel that I am wasting a little of the product each time I use it. I am used to using anti-perspirant sprays that dispense a light 'mist' of product each time I use it, but in the case of the Nivea Double Effect spray, I feel the product dispensed resembles more of a small 'shower' than a light misting of spray and I find that my underarms feel overly wet as a result, which is not a feeling I particularly enjoy! For this, and for the fact that I feel I am wasting some of the product each time I spray it, I will be deducting one mark from the product rating.
In terms of the effectiveness of the Nivea Double Effect anti-perspirant, I find it works quite well at keeping my underarm area pleasantly dry and free from any 'perspirant residue.' I would say that it works as well as most other anti-perpriant products that I buy regularly, so I am fairly pleased with the results. However, in terms of the claim on the reverse of the packaging "48 h confidence, anti-perspirant protection" I am slightly dubious. I can't honestly say that I would be at all comfortable and confident enough to 'skip a day' where this product is concerned. I am perhaps being slightly unfair as I haven't actually tried out this theory, but I personally chose to apply fresh anti-perspirant each and every day, and I feel the effects of ANY anti-perspirant product that has been applied in the morning has usually worn off by bedtime of the same day. So, its fair to say I have my reservations.
The "Double Effect" element of this product comes by way of a sort of added 'skin softening' quality within its formula. There is a claim to the front of the packaging, stating "Smoother Underarms For Longer" and a similar claim on the reverse, informing me that this product "Softens the skin, helping you to get a close shave." I only came to realise these claims on the packaging some two weeks after I had been using the product and I had noticed no difference to the softness or underarm area beforehand, nor did I notice any difference when it came to shaving the area. I cannot honestly say therefore, that I find that this product delivers any different results from any other anti-perspirant deodorant I have used before and I feel that these claims from the manufacturer are a little far-fetched, based on my own experiences.
On the plus side however, I have not found the product is at all harsh or even particularly 'drying' to the sensitive underarm area, which is something that I find can be a problem with certain brands of anti-perspirant, particularly those at the bottom end of the market, or more 'budget' branded products. So I am satisfied at least that the quality of the product is fairly high, and there may well be something in the "Skin Softening" claims at least.
Overall, I am fairly impressed with the product as an everyday anti-perspirant, and I would buy it again. I wouldn't necessarily pay full-price for it however, as I feel the results achieved are on a par with most other anti-perspirant products that I use regularly.
The Nivea Double Effect Violet Senses Anti-Perspirant spray can be purchased in supermarkets such as Tesco, as well as drugstores such as Boots. The current price for the larger sized aerosol (250ml) in Boots is currently £3.09 (price as @ January 2012).
I have very little brand loyalty to most toiletries, especially deoderants. It bugs me if they sting when you spray after shaving, and it bugs me if I get white powdery marks everywhere, but I am generally happy to experiment and a can can last me quite a while as I am not one of these who feels the need to spray it like it is perfume.
This particular can appealed as it is a pretty can with a slight purple tinge, and it is supposed to be gentle and lead to softer skin, therefore a closer shave. In reality, yes, my underarms do seem to be nice and soft, but the razor does not perform any closer of a shave in the months I have been using this deoderant.
I can't remember what I paid for the can. I think it was around £3 for 250ml, which was the cheapest on the shelf that day, and the reason I picked it. I usually opt for sprays, as I find they dry quicker than roll ons, and I was happy enough at the till point.
In use, I find that this deoderant is absolutely fine to put on straight from the shower. I have never noticed a post shave burn I have seen when using other deoderants. This is a big plus. It is also a very 'dry' deoderant. Almost like you are spraying with a fine powder rather than a liquid. Therefore it is very quick to dry, and does not transfer onto my clothes. Even though it is powdery to the touch initially, this is not seen once it has had chance to settle on the skin.
It is average in performance for me in preventing sweating. I am not the world's most sweaty person in the underarm region. I did notice I was a bit clammy at points in the summer, but not to the extent I was thinking that I smelled bad. On a more autumnal day, there is no noticeable sweating.
The thing that I am not that fond of is the smell. I have no problem with floral smells per se, although I can find some cheap deoderants make irritate my nose and make me want to sneeze which can be worse in the summer months if my hayfever is playing up. While this didn't affect me in that way (I think because most of it seems to go on your skin than in the air) I did find that the smell of violets was a bit sickly sweet for me. It reminded me more of the scent of palma violet sweets rather than a nice perfumey type smell.
While it is not enough to put me off, after all I don't spend much of the day with my nose in my own armpit, I would try a different scent if I could next time, or buy something else. That is why I am only giving it 3 stars.
It's ok. Not the best. Far from the worst I've tried. But it is not that special for me.
A lot of deodorants on the market today and lovely in fragrance but not very good at all in being an actual anti perspirant, they only seem to last a couple of hours but if your out in town or just doing daily jobs I found that they never even did the job at all, and the smell weared off very easily, after seeing about 100 Nivea deodorant adverts on the TV I decided to go buy a can of this, which at the time was £2 on offer from Morissons.
This comes in all sizes and measurements, you can get this in a large can, medium or in a mini can measuring approximately 4-5 inches tall, this is ideal for taking around with you in your bag and especially for a night out, I have both the big and the mini deodorant because the large one is very value for money at the moment for just £2 when the medium can is almost the same price, the mini ones are only 99p, you can also get this in roll on form if you don't like to use sprays, this is ideal for you.
This like stated on the adverts, doesn't leave white marks on your clothes or skin even when sprayed at a close range, it is very quick drying, it only takes a few seconds so it means you can get dressed more or less straight away after wards with out worrying about creating sweat from the rubbing. Nivea guarantee that this will last for 24hours, which is very true, I can go all day and night, which just spraying it once, when I get up in the morning, I can still smell it on me so it does a really good job.
The fragrance is, rather neutral to me, violet is quite a chilled out smell, reminds me of baby powder and how babies and children smell, it's a very fresh clean smell and one I love to have on me, it's very long lasting and the fragrance can still be smelt the next morning, because the smell is quite neutral you don't need to worry about it clashing with your perfume smells because it won't
I 100% recommend this product to everyone
I bought this for the first time a couple of weeks ago when it was on a special in the supermarket down to £1.00, well I am glad it was only £1.00 as it is completely useless.
I did as directed shook the can well and held it 15cm away from my underarm, the first thing to hit you is the awful smell very sweet and sickly and quite overpowering as if that was not bad enough the stuff just does not seem to dry.
Normally when you spray on a deororant it dries straight away or within a couple of seconds, not this stuff it just seems to stay wet and a bit sticky, I have stood for a full 10 mins waiting for it to dry and it just refuses to, as soon as you put on your clothes this wetness transfers on to the underarms of your top, so you feel damp and sweaty before you have even left the house.
It really is useless I wouldn't use it again if they paid me to.
The only reason it is getting a 1 star rating is that I have to click on the stars to get the review published, pity there are no minus stars.
I always like the Nivea brand and this product is no exception. It does what it claims and I always feel fresh when I wear it. However, I'm not sure it would be good enough if you were exercising or particularly sweated. It is quite a light and mild deodorant compared to others on the market. I like the fact it has no alcohol, which is very hard on the skin and I try to avoid where I can, but most products do seem to have it.
The smell is very fresh and not overpowering, which I like, but some may not find it strong enough given its purpose. It does leave quite bad white marks too. Overall I would definitely buy it again but I think perhaps it would not suit everyone, especially if you are in to sports or need a really strong smelling and powerful long lasting deoderant.
I bought this product as it was on offer, I now know what it was being sold cheap!
Well, according to the can, this should be violet scented and I suppose it does smell vaguely of those palm violet sweets I used to have when I was little. It is a ghastly sweet smell, which has a strong hint of talc. It really sticks in the back of your throat and is far from the "delicate flower fragrance" promised on the can. It also lingers in the air.
A very poor performance here I'm afraid. Obviously this is the key area for any anti-perspirant and it was a massive let down. I have an issue with staying dry, so I never expect a product to work as well on me as it would other people, but feeling damp about an hour after applying is a bit much really! The claim on the can is 24 hour confidence, so only 23 hours out in my experience.
====The "Double Effect"====
The other claim made by this product is it will leave your skin smoother, making for a closer shave, resulting in "smoother underarms for longer". Really? Well my underarms must have misunderstood that as I am still shaving as often as I have done before. I haven't really found my underarms feeling any smoother, and having used Dove products, the comparison is very poor for smoothness after use.
This is the usual hold 15cm away and spray can. However, when you spray, a chalky/silly string substance builds up around the nozzle. Under my arms, a white film appears as I spray, which will rub off on to my clothes. After spraying, I feel damp and uncomfortable, not secure as a deodorant should leave you feeling.
You can at least use this product after shaving knowing it won't sting you, as it's alcohol free. It also contains avocado extract, but I don't quite know what that adds to the product. Usefully it does tell you that this is an "anti-perspirant not shaving product"!!
I picked up a 250ml can for around £1.50 when it was on offer.
I'm sure you know the answer already, but no. I would not recommend this to anyone. The smell is horrible, it feels sticky and damp and it just doesn't work at all. There are much better anti-perspirants available.

Have never written a deodrant before, so lets see how it goes!
I was first introduced to this deodrant about three years ago. I was away in Cardiff for the weekend (auditioning for the X Factor, I think). I remember my friend and I were shopping in the shopping centre, and there were girls handing out free samples of this deodrant; we hadn't smelt it at the time, although as we had walked past them a few times that afternoon, we were given a few samples, which was good!! Even now, when I smell the deodrant, it reminds me of my weekend in Cardiff with my friend!
First of all, I absoultely love the design of the bottle. It is a lovely lilac colour, and is quite a 'busy' bottle in terms of design. It has the famous 'Nivea' in a white font and dark blue backgroundm as well as a few diagrams and images. There is lots of information on the back telling you about how to use the product, what it does, as well as few bits of other information including the dangers of using aerosols. In fact, this is the deodrant with the most information on the back; there is a lot of writing on the back of this one.
Applying the deodrant is simple. There are instructions on the bottle which tell you to hold the can approximately 15cm away from the underarm and spray. Do not spray on broken skin or sores. Make sure that the deodrant is dry before dressing.
Nivea's Double Effect Anti-perspirant promises 24 hour care, gentle care and smoother underarms for longer. Whilst the deodrant is very gentle and does make my underarms quite smooth, I don't really know if it does actually live up to it's '24 hours' thing as I usually shower everyday and so don't wear it for long enough to see if it does last 24 hours. It does last me about 8 hours though (if I am not doing anything, such as in college etc). However if I am waitressing, and getting all sweaty, then I do like to re-apply it after about four hours, to freshen up - although I can't smell sweat which has got to be a good thing!
I love the smell of this deodrant. It is a really pleasant smell, consisting of quite a floral smell. It's a very feminine smell and I love the fact that it makes me feel really feminine. The smell really does last. The amount of times that I have been complimented on my 'perfume' or asked what my 'perfume' was. People are shocked when I reply with 'It's not perfume, it's my deodrant'.
I feel really confident when I am wearing this deodrant. I think because one, it makes me feel really feminine, and secondly the scent really lasts, and so I think it's because I can still smell the scent a couple of hours after putting it on, means that because I can smell the deodrant, then I can't be smelling of sweat which is great. I always feel fresh when I am wearing this.
I am currently reviewing the 'small bottle' as I call it, which contains 150ml of deodrant- although there are even smaller ones (travel sizes) and a larger one at 250ml (all of which I have tried). The only difference is the price (obviously).
The 150ml which I have, cost me around £1.99 from the supermarket/Boots/Superdrug - I can't remember where exactly, although what I do know is that it is nearly always the same price in all of these places, apart from when of course, it is on offer.
Talking of offers (what great things they are!), I can't help but notice that this deodrant always seems to be on offer. Most of the time I find that it is the 250ml which is on offer. The usual price of the 250ml one is around £2.89 although sometimes it is on offer, and ends up costing less than the smaller one (150ml) is selling at full price. So more often than not, you will have the 150ml one selling for about £1.99 and the larger one will be on offer for about £1.97 which I don't think makes sense as obviously people are going to want to spend 2p less for a 100ml-more-sized-bottle! When it's on offer, I think that it is great value for money.
Also, I find that a bottle of 150ml lasts me quite a while, a month or so which is good, as it means that you are getting good value for money.
I do have quite sensitive skin, and so I was pleased to discover that this deodrant does not affect me at all which I think is good. It doesn't sting after shaving which is great too - ooh another point, is that this product contains 0% of alcohol which is good.
I do find that the deodrant does take a little while to dry, although oddly I have never had any problems, in terms of getting it on my clothes because it hasn't dried properly, which is good!
If you are looking for a deodrant, then try this!
Thanks for reading!

I got this on offer from superdrug and have to say I hate everything about it ... bar the smell, which I only mildly dislike rather than hate. Don't get sucked in by it's pretty lilac bottle. I will not be purchasing this again and unfortunately the offer was for two bottles so I'm forcing myself to use it to get rid of it. It is really tempting to just chuck it in the bin, it is totally useless!
First of all if you forget to shake it before you use it a load of product 'foams up' by the nozel which you have to wipe off.. slightly annoying and I worry that this build up will drop onto my clothes. Immediately after application the product feels horrible on the skin, it's all wet and takes a few seconds to dry, I'm used to deodorants that dry instantly, that make you feel fresh and protected. When I put this on I just feel gross and sweaty and not protected at all.
My original feeling of 'not feeling protected' was soon confirmed later on in the day when I had a mild sweat and found even this too much for the deodorant to handle! I haven't really been that active in the past few months so haven't even given this product a 'real testing' but just with regular to mild day to day activity I have found it to not prevent sweating. My tennis season will be starting soon but this will definitely NOT be the deodorant I use when I'm getting ready to play.
The only slightly redeeming quality is that it says it 'softens the skin' and I did find this to be slightly true, my underarms did feel softer and it didn't sting at all upon application (which I do find with some other deodorants). However all that is sort of pointless when it doesn't do it's basic job of keeping your underarms fresh.
I got this deodorant in boots when it was on offer and I would not buy it again - even if it was 50p! The deodorant does not do what it says on the tin. the scent is very very overpowering - and its not a particular nice smell anyway. it definitely does not provide the 24 hour protection that it says it does. I found that the deodorant offered little protection against perspiration even with very very mild exercise. The product does not claim to be white mark free but I found that white marks were very visible with the deodorant. I shook the spray tin very hard ( as with all spray deodorants) but the product seemed to clump on my skin and produced the white marks. this is very annoying especially when you have to wear a dark coloured uniform to work like me.
overall i would not recommend this product - spend a bit more and get a lasting deodorant
