Advantages: Great website, personal service
Disadvantages: Limited product range
The website
I've bought a few items from Charles Hobson's, mostly GANT clothing (a pair of jeans, shirt and a jacket). I really like their site - it's clean and easy to navigate. You can filter search results by brand, category, price etc which is useful because you can say for example "show me all new jackets priced under £200". Their search engine seems to work pretty well - a search for "GANT Jeans" produced a selection of appropriate items.
The checkout process is very slick and the 'address book' feature means you don't have to re-enter your billing and shipping addresses when placing an order. These sort of features are common on sites like Amazon but smaller and/or specialist retailers often have a pretty limited website. Credit to Charles Hobson's for taking the time to develop a decent e-commerce site.
The only improvement I would suggest is to link more of the products together - for example it would be nice to see a suitable shirt when viewing a pair of jeans. I have seen this functionality on their site, but they need to do it for more products
Clothing range
I would give them 3 stars for product selection - I think they need to add more items to their site. I've been to their Easingwold store and they seem to have a much greater selection of products in their store than online so I'm hoping that they are just testing the water before putting their entire range online
Customer service
5 stars here - I sent them a couple of emails asking for advice and they always responded promptly and helpfully. If you are unsure about the fit of a particular garment or are just looking for some general fashion advice I would strongly recommend you drop them a line.
Summary: One of the few independent retailers with an excellent e-commerce site. Highly recommended!
