Advantages: excellent quality
Disadvantages: washing the stuff is a pain!
I discovered Jack Wills when I started up at university in Edinburgh almost 4 years ago. It was not a brand that I had ever heard of. The full brand name is Jack Wills University Outfitters and the most recognisable symbol visible on Jack Wills clothing is that of the little pheasant with a top hat, scarf and cane, just to give you a general idea of the prestige and middle-class rich student that is their target customer. The phrases "Best of British" and "Fabulously British" are also linked with the brand ethos. Their products are influenced by British heritage and they claim to use the finest materials. Their ranges of products span across the following:
Ladies - Accessories, bags and purses, blazers, denim, dresses, footwear, gilets, gym range, hats/gloves/scarves, hoodies + sweat tops, hosiery + socks, jackets, knitwear, loungewear, polo + rugby shirts, shirts, shorts, skirts, skiwear, sweatpants, tops + tees, trousers + leggings and underwear.
Gentlemen - accessories, bags, blazers, denim, footwear, gilets, gym, henleys, hoodies, sweat tops, jackets, knitwear, loungewear, new balance, footwear, outerwear, polos + rugbys, shirts, shorts, skiwear, suits, sweatpants, tees, trousers, underwear and socks.
Homeware - active, bath + beauty, furniture, home accessories, jewellery, kitchen, lighting, make up, soft furnishings, stationary, technology and gift sets.
Prices
As far as prices go, they are pretty expensive. To give you an idea, for a tee-shirt you are looking at an average of £35 (although can be more or slightly less), £60 - £70 for a hoody and around £50 for sweatpants. Just to give you an idea. Their bedding range is also really expensive; you're looking at £80 for a single duvet cover. Ouch.
Quality
I have several items from Jack Wills: a jumper, a polo shirt, 3 henleys and sweatpants. I purchased them a few sales ago as I do find their stuff really expensive. I love their tops because I am tall for a girl and they are long in the body. The quality is definitely a priority for Jack Wills; my polo shirt is incredibly soft and gorgeous on my skin and it washes really well. The sweatpants are thick and fleecy inside and are gorgeous. All of my tops have the little pheasant embroidered into them on the front left breast or bottom left as you wear it. JW clothes can be a pain to wash though; I generally hand wash some of the items and it can be a bit of a hassle. It would be nice just to be able to throw them into the machine every now and again.
In-store Appearance and Service
Having been in a few Jack Wills branches up and down the country, they all have a common decor theme even if the size or style of the building in which the store is situated is different. They all have a homely, manor or hunting lodge feel about them, some of them having dark wood panelling, I remember the Edinburgh store had a huge Union Jack sofa when I was in there once (not sure if it was permanent). They also set up beds with some of their bedding so that you can visualise how fabulous and British your boudoir could possibly look. From my personal experience I have to say the level of customer service is indifferent; they greet the customers and ask if they are managing okay, but that's it. I would expect extra good customer service for the prices that I pay. They have the same standard 28 day refund/exchange policy as most stores which allows for a smooth return if necessary. Sale periods: they have customers queue outside and let in in small groups by a bouncer, giving it a real air of exclusivity and, in my opinion, a little bit of snobbery.
Online Experience
I have ordered the majority of my Jack Wills items online as being abroad for most of the time over the last 2 years, it has been my only option. I then have it sent to my UK address and try it on when I get home (I only ever order shortly before I return to the UK). The UK postage is £4 for standard delivery and £8 for premium, which to be honest is not worth buying as I have received my products within 2 - 3 days on the standard delivery. Everything I have ordered has always been packed really, really well and they even included gift boxes in my Christmas order, very sweet of them. They usually have a pretty decent stock level of most products, even in the sale, nothing to complain about there. It is worth noting that you have to pay the postage to return stuff, which is a pain, but they refund you quickly via the same payment method that you used to purchase your item (just for the item, not the postage). I have only had to do this once but they received it within a week and they credited me back straightaway.
Sizing
The sizes are spot on there, even generous in some items. People told me that the size 10s were quite tight, but to be honest I think these people are just lying to themselves about sizing as they fit me with room to spare. I have a pair of sweatpants which were very roomy for their size though, so best to try stuff on if you want to avoid returning it.
Overall Opinion of Jack Wills
I love wearing the clothes but I do not think they are exclusively made for rich students, although definitely a young audience. I find their clothes comfortable and of a quality worthy of the price tags. There is definitely an awesome British vibe that comes with their clothes and I do feel proud to be British anyway, but a little bit more so when I wear these clothes. I am a sucker for a good marketing campaign. The quality is excellent and I will continue to buy from them for the considerable future, but if the high price tags put you off, they have a sale on now so get shopping!
Summary: highly recommended for their quality and branding
