Advantages: a couple of the tops are nice- if they fit you
Disadvantages: overpriced, most stuff only comes in one size, no range of different styles
When I was about 15 or 16 and obsessed with black baggies, string vests and pink furry bags, I saw a girl wearing a black punkyfish top with 3 zips across her boobs (which were open) and I fell in love with it. I asked her where she got it from and sure enough I was there the very next day to hunt down my very own. I took £20 with me, because surely that would be enough for it (I don’t usually spend more than a tenner on a top) , anyway I got to the shop and immediately saw one that was perfect. It was black and pink (my 2 favourite colours in the world) and it was basicly a vest with lines of string across the front. I was absolutely gutted when the price tag read £24.99, but my mate lent me a fiver so I got it. A week later one of my friends showed up at my house in the exact same top and grey punkyfish trousers (which cost £49.99), then we met up with some more friends who were all wearing punkyfish too. That was just the start though, every other month I’d get a new one to add to the collection, as did a lot of people that I was friends with at the time. It got silly, everyone had the same tops, trousers and jackets that never fit properly (most punkyfish lines only some in ‘one size fits all’). After about 2 months the tops would fade and go out of shape and I’d never wear them anymore. I remember feeling sorry for my bigger friends, as punkyfish tops are quite fitted and they only came in one size, so if they managed to actually fit into one then it would look absolutely horrendous. I think Punkyfish is overrated, over priced and over sized. Just because a top says ‘one size fits all’ it doesn’t necessarily mean it. It might aswell say ‘one style fits all’, because in my experience that really was the case. There weren’t even any different style tops that Punkyfish brought out, all with zips and bits of net here and there, all made out of the same material and came in a
bout 4 different colours. Wheres the ‘range’ in that? Everyone was more or less a clone of eachother, its was just a fad that little mini moshers followed because they wanted to be alternative. I thought the whole idea of being alternative was like being a free spirit, wearing whatever you felt comfortable in instead of following the crowd. Looking back I get really annoyed that I spent a lot of money on silly items of clothing that were mostly too big for me and got ruined after a short while anyway. Punkyfish mainly appeals to girls in this age category, and its so overpriced that its unbelievable. I was only earning a mere £100 a month from a weekend job, so how are young impressionable girls supposed to afford to buy clothes like that? The thing is they aren’t even great quality, its just a name that you’re paying for at the end of the day. There were loads of unbranded tops in exactly the same style that were probably just as poor quality but a hell of a lot more affordable. Thankfully I grew out of that phase after about a year, now I have a full time job and I appreciate what my parents said to me about buying clothes for the name and wasting money.

- 06/08/04 So sensibly written mate! And so true to the bone. Since my dad had a shop in Camden town for 2 years, I gotta visit the Punkyfish outlets very often for gifts ... and yes, the clothes suck bigtime. But despite this, every weekend, there isn't even space to breathe in those gawky outlets. Strange but true! |
