Superdry Clothing Company
Advantages: Looks, T-shirt quality
It's safe to say that Superdry is one of the trendiest brands out there at the moment, based on selling an image of vintage USA and Japan. Considering the company has nothing to do with 1) Japan, 2) the USA or 3) the 1960s it's clear that they've mastered marketing, but have the mastered making clothes?
The most commonly worn item of Superdry clothing is probably the T-shirt. Today they're everywhere and are one of the more reasonably priced items of Superdry clothing with some selling for around £20. It's easy to see why the Superdry T-shirts are so popular. They're bright, colourful and feel very good quality. Personally I've never had any problems with colours running or fading and I wholeheartedly recommend the T-shirts as an excellent purchase. They might be a bit pricey but they'll definitely last.
Now we come to the problem though. The Superdry range seems to me to have been based on the T-shirts and not much else. It almost seems that when the company started they pretty much just made T-shirts and got very good at it then, once they started hitting it big, though they needed a whole range of clothing. To be honest, nothing else in their range seems to hit the highs of their T-shirts and vests.
Take the hoodies for example. I'd love to be able to tell you about them but I can't. They don't make one that fits me - XXL is way too small. Now, considering I'm an averagely built 6' 2" guy that's quite surprising. The hoodies (from what I can see of my friends') do seem to last pretty well though so maybe we can forgive them one sizing faux pas.
But it's not just sizing. My XXL jumper started off as possibly the nicest jumper I have ever owned. It was unbelievably soft and bright yellow but now after only a few washes (done to the exact instructions on the garment) it has the feel of sandpaper and the yellow colour has really lost its zing. Disappointing.
However, the worst I have seen are my Superdry shorts. Both sets I have purchased really look the business (well, I like them anyway). However, they're both falling apart and I only purchased them in June! The stitching comes apart so easily it's untrue although the colours are still holding very well. Again, pretty annoying considering they're expensive.
Overall then, I'm pretty wary of buying more Superdry clothing. I'd buy another T-shirt (or a hoodie if they made one a reasonable size) in a heartbeat but the rest, nope. It really does seem like a t shirt business that lost the plot a little when it diversified.
When buying Superdry do bear in mind you're paying a premium for the brand and not the quality. Remember that and you shouldn't be too disappointed.
Summary: Paying for the Superdry name, not quality
