Advantages: Powerful 3D animations AND drawings program.
Disadvantages: For Pros and graphic enthousiasts only.
Most important is: what can you do with 3D Studio Max...
The cost is high of course (3000£) but it's far from the price of Maya (12000£).
Well, as far as it is designed for professional users, who cares about the price?
For example, the last version (3D Studio Max 4.0) has been designed mainly for video games creation on the PSX2, the Nintendo Game Cube and the MS X-Box.
It's also a powerful tool for TV programing, as channels such as CNN actually use it for the introductions of their shows or evening news.
The cinema is also interested in 3DSM, but Maya is becoming more and more a leader in this area.
Actually less known 'softwares' such as from Pixar (Toys Story, A Bug's Life) and other specialized 3D companies are the todays 's'leaders in the motion picture FX arena.
So.
3DS MAX is anyway a powerful tool, but for powerful and very patient users.
Everything is customizable, from the user's interface to the 3D renderer engines.
Thousands of options are available, and it takes a while before even mastering the interface itself.

Really, you have practice a lot of excercises before even attempting to build your own animation.
Another powerful tool in 3DSM is that it has its own language: 3DMax Script. It allows you to program as much as you can imagine such as Html and Flash Script are allowing you to do so for internet animations.
Indeed, 3D Studio Max isn't a program designed for internet applications, as you can only create .avi and .mpg files with it, which are today much too heavy to download or even to use through streaming (unlike .swf files created with Flash of Swift3D hundred of times smaller).
