Advantages: Erm...it sold well

Disadvantages: But it was cheaper for a reason

Even with it's staggering price tag, Max has always been a damn site cheaper than it's contemporaries. Release 3 has seen huge leaps and bounds in the direction of consumerism and streamlining working methods. It's just a shame it's still just not very good.
Modelling is limited at best. It just doesn't like nurbs.
Procedural processing is virtually non-existent and the editing applications are a joke.
What would you use this program for ?
Don't.
With the release of Cinema 4D XL6, cheaper, faster, miles better at everything and including a NON LINEAR EDITING FUNCTION, Cinema 4D just does it all better.
As the new underdog of the 3D animation world, it out-Maxes Studio Max.
So, before you go shelling out for a product that you might find just doesn't render the way you want, in the format you want, give Cinema a go.
The only reason for Max having become as popular as it is is due, in no small part to the price of programs like Softimage and Maya.
Don't be fooled by the vast number of people eulogising about how amazing this program is.
It's easy to be happy with your meat and two veg if you've never tried the fois gras.
