Softimage XSI ... quite a "newb" when it comes to this genre of computing I obviously can t give an expert opinion, but I can give my views on getting to grips with the software and it s many features. -So what is it?- Softimage XSI, is a 3d modelling, animation and rendering program which is used by hundreds of companies to make everything from tv adverts, animation films and the latest games. The interface is well laid out and is easily visible but as a complete new-comer to 3D it is almost impossible to use. Blender 2.0 ... of the writing of this review Blender is no longer free, in the sense that you could go to www.blender.nl and download it from the developers. They are currenty in a war over the source code and are trying to get monies to free it for the masses. So I suppose my title for this review is incorrect. But, remember that it's still available if you look around a bit on the net. So technically it's still free. The only way to get 3DMAX is to buy it...the other way, through a P2P is risking dangerous consequencies, fines, and or jail time. Good for the Anarachirst, bad for the rest of us. Xara 3D ... of you that know me will know that im a web developer. Now part of my job is evaluating new bits of software for use by the rest of the team in the office. This involves downloading tons of applications and giving them a whirl. In fact, without blowing my own trumpet, I would consider myself the office guru when it comes to graphics. I have favourite pieces of software that I know well and the other guys and gals come to me if they want a graphic or button for a website. In fact, if they want a particular scheme designing, my desk is where they line up. So it is with this knowledge that I can tell you to do one thing. Avoid the entire Xara suite like the plague! ...
