3ds max 4: ... never used any of the higher-end 3d software, like Softimage or Maya - they are so expensive!! However, I have used 3D Studio MAX. This piece of software is a professional title, but its price is significantly lower than the 2 aforementioned titles. And for this lower price, you do get a lot of features. MAX 4 has improved itself a lot since it began life on the DOS platform. Back then you used to have just...

martial_loh 3D Studio MAX R3
... started using 3D Studio MAX when version 2.5 came out. Back then as a new user I was extremely confused by the depth and detail that MAX had to offer me. It wasnt until I read a few help-books that I understood the basics of MAX.... and I am still learning the program now!! MAX 3 brought a new look to the series of programs. There is now a new toolbar at the top of the screen with many tabs which can be used to access nearly all the modelling modifiers, object creators and other features. Improved meshsmoothing has been included - so now your models can be made to look even more organic than ever! One of the other modifiers that has been added is "flex", whi...

martial_loh Metacreations Canoma
... concept of this product is very good. Take a photo of a building, stick some basic 3d shapes to make a general outline of the building, then "glue" the photo onto the shapes. Presto - a 3d model! I tried a demo version of this product about a year ago. the tutorials were very easy to complete, and the results were pretty good. So when I got a 30 day working trial sent to me, I was contemplating purchasing the product.. Its a good thing I tried the program out on some of my own photos... For one thing I realised that the user interface is over-simple. There is a real lack of detail. The shapes you create are positioned on various layers of 3d space, an...

martial_loh Blender 2.0
... I first heard news about Blender I thought "YES! A free 3D program! No more needs for licenses etc!!" So I downloaded it. And I loaded it up. Then the pin dropped. The interface was crammed into my screen - buttons and tabs overflowing from all sides. There was also a putrid stench of "grey" across the whole screen. Don't get me wrong, lots of programs have grey in em, but this Blender, it was greyer than John Major(sorry John!)!! Even with a downloaded manual and FAQ, I had troubles even creating a sphere on this program.. It took me a while to figure out where the main toolbar (move, scale, rotate) was located and another 2 days before ...
