3dsmax 4 is just the best 3d package i have ever tried. It is most probably what a professional would go for to use for 3d modelling. It is also the most capable rendering package ever.The large number of functions in 3dsmax necessitates a careful approach to usability. Although beginners can easily get 'lost' , in most cases the methods of accessing functions seem difficult to improve upon. Release v4 has enhancements in many areas, the most notable of which are in film and video development, customisation, workgroup use, better realism and generally increased functionality. 3dsmax has been a major success with game developers, and even if you've only seen a handful of modern games, you'll have almost certainly seen the program's graphics.
In conclusion, this is certainly worth the money if you are going to use it heavily.
