Advantages: Fast, Simple, Effective.
Disadvantages: Doesn't always remove the really bad stuff
For many years Lavasoft's Ad-Aware has been the defacto tool for removing those horrible mishaps where you've accidentally downloaded a piece of nasty spyware or malware.
Software is very straight forward to use, either you a quick scan or a full scan and then you click the great big Scan Now button to scan. This is eventually followed by a results showing what can and should be deleted from your computer.
The free version works great, the pro version offers a bit more such as a memory-resident program but I wouldn't say it's worth forking out money for.
Lavasoft Ad-Aware is still going strong so much so that there are even two more versions that you can upgrade to (one even being free).
However, since Ad-Aware came to the forefront, many more utilities such as CounterSpy and SpywareDoctor have come along that prove things can be done better and quicker. I've come across many situations where Ad-Aware could not find a particular nasty piece of spyware but even more occasions where it did find spyware but never managed to successfully remove it.
Overall, Ad-Aware needs to be in your medicine box to keep your PC healthy, it does work but you should always use more than. I recommend the above too programs as well as Spybot Search & Destroy and Malware Anti-Malware as great compliments to your war on spyware.
Summary: Ad-aware Free is a must for anyone with a Windows PC.
