Advantages: Free, Easy to Download, Easy to Use

Disadvantages: None

I have recently discovered a great little free software program that scans your PC memory, registry and hard drives for spyware and allows you to remove it safely.

Spyware consists of nasty little programs that are inadvertently downloaded onto your PC in the form of "cookies" while you are surfing the net. The purpose is to build up a profile of you and your particular interests by logging your visits to various websites, all of this is done without your knowledge or permission!

The Ad-aware program is produced by Lavasoft and can be downloaded free from their website (www.lavasoft.de/aaw)
It does not take up much space on your machine, is quick to download and very simple to configure.

There are various options that you can set up to scan your system. The scanning process takes less than a couple of minutes and it will report any known spyware and allow you to safely remove it.

In summary, a very useful item of free software which should help you keep "Big Brother" at bay a liitle longer.

Not only does spyware come in on cookies - not me I use Cookie Pal - but it gets there in other ways. Some programs like iMesh and Netsonic are adware and spyware and admit it, but don't tell you at the time. Ad-aware is for them. Cookie Pal and similar programs stop the cookies.

Ha! - and did you know that Dooyoo uses one too! At least they have the decency to confirm this in the Terms and Conditions - The Doubleclick ad program. You can follow the link to the Doubleclick homesite for a cookie that turns this off. This is how all spyware programs should work - And if it doesn't, Ad-aware is the next best thing!
