I first used photoshop 5 so i cannot claim to have seen the rise and rise of it all but being a web designer it is a great program to use. The cutting edge technologies with the familiar tools make it easy to make great graphics. A visual quickstart guide sorted me out in getting to know it. I'm not claiming to be a guru with it either. The methods used make it easy to make the graphics in your mind. And with this version, put it on the web. The included Image ready software compresses the images quite a bit - not as much a fireworks. You have the option to look at the image 4 up - i.e. see the original and 3 other versions all with different compression settings to enable you to pick the best. It also gives the download time at user specified download rates.
The tools in Photoshop have been copied a great deal, but still the simplest program to deal with layers is this. As long as you run a 1078x780 resolution the menus and pallets shouldn't annoy you. Try and get some more RAM too. I run 192 with a Celeron 400 and am able to keep Dreamweaver, Flash and Photoshop all going, so I can immediately see the result in a web situation without closing down.
