I'm sure I'm not the only person becoming just a little irritated at the number of pop-up windows one has to endure to browse the internet. It is a rare occasion when you find a site free of advertising, and ever rare that it has good content.

For a long time I have wondered whether or not it was possible to rid yourself of pop-ups, and it seemed the only way to go about this was to simply turn off javascript in your internet options. Of course, this meant that the sites you wanted to look at invariably did not work properly.

Fortunately, there is now another option. The wonderful site, AnalogX (www.analogx.com, they have loads of free programs), have written a piece of software called Pow!.

It works very simply. It sits on your taskbar, very inconspicuously, and closes any and dvery pop-up window that opens while you are browsing the web.

One of the best features of Pow! is the function that allows you to specify pop-ups ou want to have removed. When you download the software, it comes with a very basic list of pop-ups (it works according to title and URL) that it will close. Over time you will find more and more windows that are not included in that list. When you find such a window, all you do is click on the pow icon, and double click the name of the window that you would like to have automatically closed from now on!

It gets better as well. A lot of adverts have a URL like this: http://www.annoyingsite.com/popup/randompage.html. Every time you visit the site, it is a different advert you are shown. For this reason, Analog X Pow! allows you to edit the URLs you want to be automatically closed. With a couple of mouse clicks, you can ensure that any pop-ups from annoyingsite.com are closed by replacing randompage.html with a simple *.

Programs like this are few and far between. Pow! makes no discernable difference to your system's speed and is very very easy to run. It is also free, which is always
a bonus.

If, like me, you spend too much time surfing the web and have become sick of the advertising you are subjected to on every site you visit, get Pow! as soon as you can - and kiss pop-up windows goodbye!
