The downside for novice users is that it can be unnerving when it keeps popping up with things to check and you may not know whether or not to allow an action - especially when it tells you programmes are accessing your keyboard, monitor, registry, and other things you may not even know existed. AVG AntiVirus Free Edition ... a 2MB broadband connection. Installed AVG on my computer with no problems at all, uses very little system resources and have had no viruses or spyware since installing so seems to be doing a good job of detecting and deleting viruses. Virus definition updates are available at about once day and the latest version of AVG free updates itself automatically. Only problem I've found is the time AVG takes to complete a full scan my last scan took 35mins. I use AVG Free Edition along with Ad-Aware 2007, Mozilla Firefox web browser and Advanced Windows Care V2, all are free and so far I've had no problems with viruses or spyware at all. AVG AntiVirus Free Edition ... of the AVG antivirus programme. For a free edition there is no time period and little restricted features. However i am also running, trojan remover, avg anti-spyware, a norton trial, avg anti rootkit and spybot in order to keey my laptop the cleanest i can. You can get this free download from grisoft.com and once it's installed your set for life. It picks up a few viruses but it can let a couple slip. The updates are daily and take a minute or two to download and install. Once they have been, you don't need to restart your computer. AVG AntiVirus Free Edition ... load) for over two years, and it has NEVER detected any bad files. But wanting to get some throughput from my system, I uninstalled McAfee and installed AVG 7.5 Free. During its first run, it detected and eliminated a Trojan file McAfee never saw! Now I have a Windows XPSP2 system that restarts in five minutes (instead of twelve to fifteen minutes) and an Internet Explorer 7 browser tbat ALMOST loads as fast as Firefox 2! I'm running separate (also free) spyware, adware, and System Protection applications which total less system load now than McAfee grabbed with its System Protection, antivirus, and a few other things it threw into the mill.
