Advantages: Buddy icon, send attatchments easily, change fonts easily, send faces, block and warn people, profiles. Easy to use.

Disadvantages: Not many UK users. Most the people you know are likely to have MSN anyway!

AOL Instant Messenger is one of the best Instant Messenger programs. I also have Yahoo Instant Messenger and MSN Instant Messenger but find AOL very easy to use. I like chatting to people internationally as well as people from the UK. About 90% of the people I chat to are from America and this can be annoying! I have just heard that you can now download an English version of AOL Instant Messenger, where you only talk to people from the UK! But if you want this version and already have the normal one, the normal one will be deleted off your system. More information can be found at www.aol.com

The actual Messenger is very easy to use. You can download it from www.aim.com and you can go in the chat rooms here:

You can change the background colour, the colour of the font, the font itself, make the font bigger, smaller, italic, bold and you can even put smiley faces in your messages! You can also do this on MSN Messenger but on MSN you have to type in
:-) or :-( or whatever face you want to do and it will come out as a yellow smiley/sad etc face. On AOL Messenger though, you simply click on the faces option and click on the face you want to insert!

There is a buddy icon (A small icon which is shown in the bottom right hand corner of the screen when chatting). You can send pictures and other attatchments easily too and if you click on "Direct Connection" it says "Your buddy is typing" when they are typing! This is also available on MSN. If you do not like someone you can block them or even warn them if they behaving badly. Every time you warn them their warning level increases about 5-10%. When it reaches 100% they cannot use AOL Instant Messenger for at least a few hours. You can only warn someone up to 30%. You can also warn anonymously if you really want to be devious but then their warning level only increases by about 3%.

You can have as many screen na
mes as you like on AOL Instant Messenger and also view other peoples (and make your own) profile. You can also search for other users using their name, address (if they put it in their profile) loaction and interests. If you have an AOL account you can set the messenger to inform you when you have a new message. You can also talk to other users using your microphone and your speakers. The sound wuality is quite clear but it does get a bit fuzzy when it's busy.

All AOL users get AOL Instant Messengers installed on their computer if they sign up using the disk. Non AOL users can download it from www.aim.com
