Advantages: Quick and Friendly, Fun and less boring than other services, Excellent File Transfer
Disadvantages: Not Every1 has it :(
When I come on the internet I do one of two things. I either play Red Alert 2 or Download things. I find Aol Instant Messanger the best messaging service for both of these things for several reasons. Before I go into them let me point out one thing. AIM is not the same as the messanger Built into the AOl 6.0 software.
Firstly I shall list the messaging services I have :
Aol Instant Messanger
Msn Messanger
Yahoo Messanger
Icq
In my opinion AIM is far superior to MSN or Yahoo. It does come close to ICQ though. Some people dont like ICQ but if use all its features there are lots. For more information read my review on ICQ.
When playing RA2 AIM is the best service. You can make your own away message and it auto-responds when people speak to you and they can leave you a message. It has options of removing sound whilst away or even not allow incoming messages whatsoever. I have also noticed that the majority of the RA2 community use AOL and it is very popular.
During my time using MSN and other services I noticed that sometimes the messages dont always get delivered and file transfers always fail. With AIM every message gets delivered and you can even Resume file transfers.
AIM has got an excellent feature which I am yet to see on other messangers and that is a direct image link. This means when in a conversation you can paste images for ure buddy to look at.
You can even set up AIM to read all your POP3 e-mail accounts all combined into one account. As in ICQ you can search for friends depending on Age, Sex, Location and interests.
You can modify virtually anything in AIM to suit your preferences. You can even have different shades/sizes of fonts depending on how long people have been idle for.
My favourite feature in AIM is the Buddy Icons. This is a unique feature available only on AIM.
Buddy icons are images such as cartoon characters, symbols, pictures, and other graphical
images you can use to represent yourself or buddies in your Buddy List. Buddy icons appear in the lower-left corner of your Instant Message windows when you and your buddies send messages back and forth to each other. These are really cool as you can assign your own to your friends.
Normally you get bored with messanger services and sometimes ignore people because they can get a bit boring but AiM is so interesting because of the amount on things you can do talking is always fun.
