Advantages: free, does everything you could need

The best audio editing software out there. And its completely free. What more could you want?

It supports line in recording and microphone in as well as recording audio as its played. For instance if you wanted to record windows applications sounds.

It allows you to view and edit the sound wave directly point by point as well as offering a comprehensive assortment of tools. These include a noise remover and speed edit facility. These are extremely useful for putting vinyl onto the computer in mp3 format as crackles and pops can be removed. The speed is adjustable by as much as you want but has pre-sets for converting between 33 and 45 rpm.

Tracks can also be split and merged so one side of a record can be recorded then split afterwards. Multiple tracks can also be recorded and moved in relation to each other to sync them properly.

One downside is that it needs an external mp3 coder to export in mp3 format but other than that it has managed everything I've needed it to do.
