Advantages: Totally free, Small download, Loads of skins
Disadvantages: Shuffle not totally random..., That's all!
There is no doubt that in the PC based MP3 player world at the moment, WinAMP is a very strong contender. One glance at the many features on offer, coupled with the fact that it is available as a totally free download, and there is no wonder so many computer users are running WinAMP. As opposed to the more expensive commercially available MP3 players, such as MusicMatch (although excellent in its own right), WinAMP succeeds by ditching any feature not necessary to the playback of music, which results in a very small download time and tiny working memory. So you will find no "CD-ripping" facilities, WAV-MP3 converter or automatic CD burning here. If it don't make it sound good, throw it out. What it does have, however, is a perfectly adequate 10 band graphic equaliser (for getting those tunes to sound just right), a functional playlist, shuffle, and even a tag editor so you can make the title and artist fields look nice. Looking nice is another plus. WinAMP in its default "skin" resembles a conventional hi-fi setup. But why stop there? Get over to the website and download yourself as many new skins as you please. They come in all flavours and colours, spanning "The Matrix" to Hello Kitty. There are thousands of them, so you will find one that you like, I can assure you. Operation of WinAMP is very easy, and if you have ever operated a hi-fi system before (come on, that really is most of us) you will have no problem, but elaborate help files are supplied to make sure everything runs smoothly. Well, all that's left to do is load up my Dave Brubeck mp3s and just groove on out of here... Have fun with your tunes! WinAMP can be found at: www.winamp.com
