Advantages: Free, Thorough, Effective

Disadvantages: Full system checks slow PC down for a short while

I remember the first time I discovered my laptop had a virus: I was devastated; my baby was sick!!! So I got online and started researching anti-virus software, expecting to have to fork out a small fortune for one of the big brand name packages. And then I stumbled across AVG - it was free and made great claims for itself, so I figured it was worth a try.

And it was.

AVG updates itself constantly - every time I switch the computer on, I think - scans everything you open, and runs scheduled system checks. I've been using it for three years, and so far not one virus has snuck past it.

The only downside is that the full system check does slow the computer down for twenty minutes or so, but I imagine the expensive anti-virus packages do the same. Frankly, it's worth being a wee bit patient with it for such inexpensive peace of mind.

I've recommended AVG to every PC-owner I know, and I fully recommend it to you.
