Advantages: the whole programme
Disadvantages: none for me
After purchasing a new laptop, when I got home I found that it had Norton installed onto it for a trial of 90 days. Knowing how to use Norton as we have it on the desktop computer, I decided to just leave it there for the 90 days. This has just run out. I had to remove Norton before I could install AVG, this is really simple, but must be done the correct way by using the removal tool that you download from the site not through add/remove programs in the computer.
On the recommendation of a friend I decided to give AVG a try, and I have been pleasantly surprised to say the least. At first I did find it a little tricky to find the free version, I eventually found it on the following website address: http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-e dition. Firstly to find this I brought up Google, the typed in Free AVG, then searched for this, I think it was about the 3rd option down.
To install AVG free was really easy, there is a button that asks you to press to download, once this has happened, the system takes over and does the rest, it must have took about 5 minutes at most, which is really quick compared to some other antivirus software.
The first thing that I did was to run a full system scan on the computer after it was installed in case Norton had missed anything. I found that the full computer scan took about an hour and 20 minutes to complete, while this was happening the computer did slow down a little but nothing that was annoying or irritating, but there was no security risks detected. Plus the good thing is that you can also schedule the scan to run when ever ir suitable for you, selecting a specific day and time. Updates are also done on there own when new ones come in.
It is really easy to navigate around the AVG control panel. Everything is shown in picture form. In the free software you are given : anti-virus, anti-spy ware, email scanner, license, link scanner, resident shield and update manager. These all have their own settings that you can customise to give you better control of the computer, and again this is really easy.
I really like the way that when you do a web search through and search engine, when the results come up they are immediately scanned to make sure that the content is safe, and this is indicated by a green tick that is next to the website details.
I have only been using the free version of AVG for a few days now, but am finding it really easy to use and will definitely be putting it on the desktop when our year subscription runs out. We are using Windows Vista and there is no problems with it running so far. The version that I have downloaded is the new version 8.0.175.
If you have any problems with the service the email link is as follows: http://free.avg.com/ww.help

I would definitely recommend this product to anyone that wants to have a really good reliable, easy to use free anti virus software.
