Advantages: Easy to run and won't clog up your systemstem

Disadvantages: None

I've tried many virus scanner programmes over the last two years, most of which seem to cause more harm than good by clogging my system and slowing down programmes. Then I discovered this little gem from www.grisoft.com.

AVG is a free to download program and runs beautifully and silently in the background leaving me to get on with more important things, I don't even notice it being there!

One of the nicest things about this program, is not only does it scan all your important files on your hard drive, but also emails and attachments with the bonus of certifying your outgoing emails as being virus free.

The program regularly automatically updates itself by downloading the latest virus database and you can configure the software to determine how often you want to check for the latest upgrade.

The program's default scheduled setting is to scan your entire system once daily which is excellent (you can set the time you want the scan to occur) but the one disadvantage with this is that the scanner will check each and every file on your hard drive which can take up to one or two hours to complete. And whilst the programme is scanning you may find your system will slow a little. However, if you're busy working at the time, you can elect to cancel the scan and schedule later, or just leave it until the next day when it leaps into action again. You also have the facility to scan your system or separate drives on demand.

The website also send regular emails notifying you of any new viruses and recommendations to upgrade your database if you haven't done this for a time.

The interface on this system is one of the easiest I've seen on a virus scanner program. If the software detects a virus, it will move it to the virus vault and heal the virus immediately. Since installing this programme about 8 months ago, it has automatically detected and removed 4 viruses on my system.

All in all, this
is a wonderful little program that runs smoothly and easily with the bonus of costing you nothing more than a few minutes of downloading time.

I find AVG6 perfectly adequate and easy to upgrade too. I did actually pay for mine (ggrrrrr! OK it was only £15) about two years ago, and the way they told it to me then, was that this buys you support up to the intro of version 8. I guess the fact that support is now free means something, like v7 is imminent or some such. I did read that many of the virus writers see AVG6 as the one to beat, which says something about AVG6 in a flattering kinda way!

Good review. I have used AVG 6.0 for the past year and it has served me very well. It's not often you get such a good product that is entirely free and you can continue to download updates to keep up with all the latest viruses.

Free?! Functional?! My favourite combination... I'll look into it.
