Advantages: free tv programmes.
Disadvantages: only last seven days.
In the past two years BBC has piloted a new service. TV on the PC. BBC calls it iplayer.
Basically this new facility gives you chance of watching TV again. Shows broadcast in the past seven days are available to watch again on your PC from bbc.co.uk/iplayer. So iplayer is an internet site that contains content for view.
This service has taken off in a big way. Millions of hits everyday. Watch the programme on PC straight away or download it and watch later.
Only programmes from last seven days are available from both radio and TV. Downloads to PC give 30 days to watch. There is a small catch though. Once downloaded you only have seven days to keep the download. After that it is not viewable.
Downloads are done at high speed and luckily there is no buffering on straight watch from the site.
This iplayer is available on virgin media (cable) and will also shortly be appearing on BT Vision and game consoles.
I think finally BBC has come up with a service that justifies the licence fee. How about people who don't have TV licence or TV sets. Perhaps they can watch free TV. That is the idea. I am selling my TV and buying extra hard disk. 30 minute programme is roughly half gig. Now that 10 gig is going for about £1 time to spend money and buy 500 gig disk to download all the good stuff from Auntie Beeb.
Remember there is no membership, just go to the site and start the content.
Summary: watch free tv.
