Advantages: Lots of programmes to watch and listen to
Disadvantages: Somtimes stutters if your bandwidth is also being used up by something else
BBC iPlayer is the BBC online portal from which you are able to watch programmes that have recently been aired on the BBC channels, including BBC1, BBC2, BBC3 and Ceebeebies. It also features radio shows that you are able to listen to and can be accessed through the web address: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer.
This facility is incredibly useful for catching up on television you have missed, for example to watch The Apprentice when it clashes with vital Champions League football matches! iPlayer features a whole host of programmes and is also very good for just having a browse around if you want to watch something on your laptop/PC before hitting the hay.
I have found some great programmes, ranging from documentaries, to comedy, to general entertainment. iPlayer itself is very user friendly and if you know what you are looking for there is a very simple search facility if your programme is not listed on the main page. The whole concept is great and is also available for the other terrestrial channels. ie. ITV and Channel 4.
You have to ensure that you have a decent internet connection (I'm sure the majority of people have broadband at least by now...!?) to make sure there is enough bandwidth to play the programme. Often if it stops or stutters during play, it is best just to hit refresh to continue watching. Overall, a superb facility and really easy to use for the whole family, and is included within your yearly TV liscence.
There is no need for installation, unlike C4's 4OD and the visual and sound quality is very high. Well done the BBC!
