Beautiful catch-up service (BBC iPlayer)

Advantages: Speedy, looks good, no adverts, large content library

Disadvantages: Shows only on for one week

The BBC now offer an extensive array of TV programmes. Sport, Drama, Action, Comedy, Documentaries, there are many different genres. And with modern internet speeds, it is now possible to stream content that has previously been on BBC TV direct to a computer.

ITV also offer a similar service entitled ITV catchup, as do channel 4, called 4OD, so naturally there is going to be a fierce competition between all of the companies for the internet space in the UK. So what does BBCs Iplayer offer over the other two?

It is quite simple really, it just has a better graphical interface, and unique software that works so well. Wheras the other two services use embedded video for their catchup in otherwise normal web pages on their sites, Iplayer is in a different league altogether. The menus, and basically the whole site, are covered in black and purple styling, and as a result the whole display looks modern and quirky. Programs are also much easier to navigate to using Iplayer, and the actual flash player used is itself quicker than the other offerings.

In terms of content, the BBC are always going to win, due mainly to the fact that they are uploading content from two very large channels. There are many shows to choose from; Mock The Week, Doctor Who, Top Gear, Spooks, and every other TV show the BBC has to offer, all in high definition. Each show can be watched for 1 week after it has been broadcast on TV, which is the only disadvantage, as on the other services a month is given.

Overall, Iplayer is a very strong performer that am I now sure gets millions and millions of views every week. It works seamlessly, loads very fast, and looks fantastic, I have been very impressed.
