BigFix Consumer Edition is fantastic. It's easy to use, it gets all the critical MS updates (some Windows Genuine Advantage updates are excluded), including some non-MS updates. It offers high download speeds, a clean and simple interface, and the system tray application does not hog system resources. Best of all, it's free of charge and contains no adware or nag screens!

It's simple. You download it, install it, and run it. It automatically searches for updates that are not installed, notably Windows Hotfixes. It alerts you, you click them, and in just a few mouse clicks, your system is up-to-date.

Though this is not the intended purpose of the program, it is a great way for a person with an invalid volume licesnse key to get critical security updates, because it bypasses Windows Genuine Advantage. However, it does not offer some updates. These, however, are not necessarily critical.
