Advantages: FREE FREE FREE, has all the basic features you would expect.
Disadvantages: Lacks a queing system and the ability to change the CHMOD
Coffee Cup FTP is a great free utility that I would recommend to any new-comer to the web authoring world. For those of you that do not know or understand; FTP means File Transfer Protocol. FTP programs allow a user to upload files to a server, such as html documents (web pages) for public viewing. Coffee Cup FTP has a freeware licence, meaning it is free to everyone. However, to download it you must register on their website http://www.coffeecup.com with a valid email address, then periodically you will receive an email advertising their latest paid product releases. This program doesn't have all the features CuteFTP has, but for a newbie to web authoring, it works fine and does most of what you need to do. The one thing it does lack is it's ability to change the CHMOD. This is the setting you give a file to allow read and write access. For example, a message board script needs to be set so that the visitor to your website can 'write' to it. Coffee Cup FTP doesn't allow this. The program also lacks a queing system, so if you are uploading to different directories, you would have to upload files to each directory seperately, which can be rather tiedious. What I like most about this program is it's simple layout and easy-to-use features. This program is a must for beginners and maybe fine for advanced users too, depending on your requirements. Even if you use another program, such as CuteFTP, I would still recommend downloading it. For a free program, it is simply superb.
