Advantages: Reliable protection

Disadvantages: Not free any more

This excellent anti-virus utility has been in use in our household since it originally became available and has unfailingly kept our machines protected from the ravages of the unholy. Virus signature updates have been timely and frequent and downloading has never occupied too much valuable connect time.

I have recommended within this august website to all and sundry its adoption as protection of choice although have so far refrained from writing my own comments, there being already sufficient glowing opinions to leave everyone in no doubt that this is not just one person's opinion.

So, why have I chosen to break my silence on the subject? A disturbing email from Computer Associates.

InoculateIT Personal Edition is no more!!!

Well, actually, that's not quite true. Those who already have it can keep it and are assured (at least for the forseeable future) of continued free virus signature updates. However, you can now no longer install it as it is now not available for download.

Instead, Computer Associates have introduce a new suite of tools in their eTrust family of security products.

They have launched eTrust EZ Armor (note the American spelling). This consists of three utilities, The existing antivirus tool, now rebranded eTrust EZ Antivirus. This is the original InoculateIT Antivirus and is available as an "upgrade" to existing IPE users at $5.95 (about 4 quid) or to new users at $19.95 (about 12 quid).

You can also buy the complete suite, which adds a firewall (essential, especially to anyone connected via ISDN or cable modem or ADSL)- eTrust EZ Firewall and what appears to be the original Mailwatcher product, now rebranded eTrust EZ Deskshield, all for $15.95 to existing IPE users or $49.95 to new users.

I'm sure all of these are admirable products but I have to ask whether they are now worth the cost, there being still many such offerings available for free.

<br>I leave you to judge.

I rate it four starts only because it is no longer free.
