K Desktop Enviroment (KDE) ... been using KDE on & off for 3 years. Not being a great fan of GUI's myself I spend a lot of time at the console but whenever I am using X Windows I will always be using KDE. It has a nice layout and there are some excellent themes available to download. If you are into coding your own applications the KDE libs are great, pretty simple. Well, I looked at them briefly and found them a bit easier to understand than the Gnome libs for example. KDE has been very stable for me, i've never had any problems with it actually. I haven't tried KDE 2 so I couldn't comment on that, but it looks great and i'm sure i'll get round to trying ... Read the full review: The best desktop (imo) by pwbit |

K Desktop Enviroment (KDE) ... looks like windows It acts Like Windows Hold on a minute it is windows - or is it! You might be pleasantly surprised by KDE. It was especially useful to me when I first broached the Linux Barrier! I came from a nice easy GUI to a new command line interface that I didnt know how to use!!! And where were the good old DOS commands when you needed them LOL! But then I stumbled accros KDE when browsing my SuSE CDs - and what a difference it has made! I can actually see what I am doing now! It even makes the old /mnt/hdd1, /mnt/hdd2/ system work! Gnome Desktop ... unlike Windows allows the user to totally change the look of the desktop. Infact you can change teh desktop it's self. At the moment I'm running GNOME but there are others such as KDE as well as running the GNOME desktop manager I also need a Window manager (as the name suggests it says how the windows are displayed ) for this I am currently running Enlightenment but I could use SawFish, Blackbox or TWMN to name just three. So what does your average Linux desktop look like well really there isn't an average desktop Enlightenment (like all linux window managers) can be themed.
