Advantages: quick, more files than kazza and morpheus combined, no max search results
Disadvantages: hard to get to grips with at first
Now just by my title don't think that I don't like Kazaa.In fact I love it to bits!In fact it was when I was using Kazaa that I stumbles upon Direct-Connect.i saw it on one of the file names and it gave the address www.neo-modus.com Naturally I was intrigued and decided to give the site a visit.
**The site**
The site (www.neo-modus.com) is generally extremely well set out and answers quite a few questions but these questions are for people who are quite knowledgeable with the software already not for newbies!I t was relatively easy to find out where to go to download the software and the free download took about 25 seconds for me (because I am on broadband) and 2 minutes for my friend (who is on a standard 56k modem).Once I had downloaded and installed the software I went back to the site and looked at ?getting started?!This was extremely confusing!It was quite hard to get to grips with.I had to go through it about 3 or 4 times AND experiment with the software myself before I really knew what I was doing.Once I had done this however it was plain sailing!
**What is direct connect**
Direct connect is a P2P (peer to peer) file sharing program (like Kazaa) except it is simply far far better!The whole system is run by the users!The users run, control, and maintain the network!Direct connect allows ANY kind of file (movies,games,mp3s,etc.) to be shared and there are no ?max search results?.Direct connect has over 1 petabyte of data!Thats triple the amount on kazaa, morpheus and grockster combined!
**Advantages**
Instead of being all on 1 facility there are a series of ?hubs? run by users and there can be certain specifications for each hub (e.g. movie network or must be on adsl etc.) which makes file sharing faster and easier since you can pick the specific hub you would like!A key advantage of course is HUGE amount of files shared which allows more choice, variety and much more.
Unlike Kazaa there is
no spyware and no advertising (the new kazaa pop-up windows has really put me off them).I speak honestly when I say that I have never failed to find a file that I wanted on direct connect!
Not only all this but you can view other members files in an easy to use ?windows explorer? manner which is a nice touch!There is of course the ability to message other users and a chat facility.One thing which I really like about direct connect is the ability to add ?users? and ?hubs? to a favourites list which is something which I felt Kazaa really lacked!
You can resume broken downloads and also ?locate alternate source? which has also never let me down!No more ?more sources needed? like on Kazaa!
You can set the number of ?slots? open (which determines how many people can download from you).Direct connect can be minimised to the system tray!
?Ops? are in each hub to ensure no viruses or unsuitable content is distributed?!
You choose what you do and don't share!
The download speeds tend to be good!
Once you have got to grips with the whole concept then using direct connect becomes a pleasure and although it is hard to get to grips with there will always be people to help you out!
**Disadvantages**
The ?newbie? guide on the neo-modus website isn?t at all good.It took me a while to understand it!
No multi-source downloading (but download speeds are still very good!)
You need 64mb RAM free (if using windows ME) or 128mb RAM (if using windows 2000)!Although the Ram isn?t too bad the application can use up quite a bit of system resources so if you plan to use many other programs while using this make sure your computer is up to scratch!
**Conclusion**
Overall this piece of software is truly ingenius!It is far better than Kazaa or Morpheus!I only wish I could have discovered it sooner!So I say ?away with Kazaa? and ?scrap morpheus?!

- 08/08/03 I could not get on with this program which is a shame really because it really does look and sound great, i used it for a little while but i couldnt get anything downloaded off there, as it was always saying there is no free slots. And couldnt get hold of anyone on there which had free slots, excellent review though, take care Lisa x |

- 29/11/02 I use DC alot, and I've used most of the major file stealing ( ahem ) sharing progs.
Got to admit, I love this one :)

- 20/10/02 Hmm, I seem to remember being bounced around hubs for not sharing enough files('scuse me for not sharing 50Gb+ on my 10Gb HDD!) but I've heard some pretty favourable things about it otherwise. |
