Advantages: Quite easy to use, lots of features

Disadvantages: Hard to use if you have never made a website before

First Page is by far the best free program to make websites on the internet. It can be downloaded from www.evrsoft.com, and is 5.2MB in size. The first edition is available now, (1st Page 2000) and the next version should be out in a couple of months. (Although on their site, it says First Page 3 should be available on April/March).

--THE FEATURES--
The features on First Page are amazing. Although the program is not quite as good as Microsoft’s Frontpage (Frontpage costs £130 for crying out loud!), there are lots of features which even beginners can find easy to use. These include 15 DHTML scripts, 17 Perl scripts (search site, guestbook, chat, counters etc.), 6 HTML scripts, 2 CGI scripts (text dock, text counter), Complete Web Builder Reference and 450 Javascripts. There is a large FAQ, which answers all your questions about making websites, including “How do I make…for my website?” and “How can I put a….on my website?”

--THE PROGRAM--
When you start up First Page, you can choose from Easy, Normal, Hardcore and Expert to make your website. But even in easy, you cannot use First Page in the same way as you do with Frontpage. On Frontpage, you can view the site/edit the site as a Microsoft Word document. There is a code to make websites, called HTML. For example, to write “dooyoo is awesome” in a red font, you must type “font color=”red”> dooyoo is awesome </font> Confusing, eh? Anyway, on Frontpage, you simply go to the paint palette on top of the page, change the font, then type, and it looks just like a Word document. But with Firstpage, you go to the paint palette, change the colour, then you will see <font color=”red”> </font> You must type in the text yourself in between the box, like I showed above. You can then preview the page to see what it looks like as a site.

There are many scripts you can insert, such as counters, calendars,
buttons, background effects, audio effects, alerts, calculators, e-mail forms, enhancements, games, links, menus, passwords, scrolling text, utilities, image effects and many more.

Also, the layout of the HTML is colour-coded, so it is easier to see what the HTML reads.

Overall, First Page is probably the best free website creation program available for download on the internet. If you have the money though, go for Frontpage, it is much easier to use. (but costs £130 more!)
