Imagine the coastline of the United Kingdom. From a satellite you see the overall shape - fairly long and thin with bits sticking out. Zoom in a bit closer and you see bays, river esturies and so on. Zoom in again and you see the small convolutions in the coastline. More zooms and you see individual rocks, then pebbles, then grains of sand and so on. At each scale the overall structure looks similar. However, as you zoom in the total "perimeter" around the UK becomes more convoluted and therefore the total distance increases.
