FreeMem is a great little piece of software which allows you to free up some RAM on your PC when you find that you are running low. Windows has an annoying habit of not freeing up memory after a process has completed which basically means that, no matter how much memory your PC has, it will come to a point where you start noticing a degradation in system performance or annoying system messages stating that there is not enough free memory to complete a specified task. Some of the programmes on your computer are greedy. By that I mean that when you run them they grab a chunk of memory and hold onto it even after you have closed the programme down on the off chance that you will re-run the programme. Then when it comes to you wanting to run a different programme you can’t because the memory hogs are doing just that – hogging all the memory. Now that’s OK if you have oodles of RAM but what if you are running on the bare minimum whilst you save your pennies to buy more? Windows software on the whole follows a theme, no I'm not on about the similarities in software caused by the GUI (graphical user interface), but on the general amount of memory that is used by software, and the sheer wastage that occurs on a regular basis. Programs use a lot of memory these days (just to clarify, as a lot of people get confused and think of memory as their hard disk, I am referring to MEMORY as in RAM, the little chips that sit on boards in your computer, and loose their content when the dog pulls the power cable out.)
