I first discovered Fruity Loops a couple of years ago after purchasing my old computer. Feeling a bit stuck on err…just about everything to do with computing, I decided to wander over to the local community computing place and see if I could get some help. As I walked in, I heard music coming from one of the computers – a dancy track that was quite good. Edging my way over and trying not to look so obviously “non-techie” I peered over the shoulder of the guy at the screen where the music was coming from. Abruptly the music stopped and he peered back. “Ooooohh a music program – cool!” I said. “Uh huh” ... Read the complete review

Having grown up with home computers (my first being a Commodore Vic20) before the boom in the PC market, all my music was made using trackers - Protracker, Modtracker, etc. Anybody that knows the development of these will appreciate the depth with which you had to go to create music on these things; a somewhat masochistic approach was needed. When I made the transition to PC's some years ago I found it extremely difficult to adapt to any of the current music packages available and using a tracker again on a PC didn't feel right, like taking a step backwards. So I gave up for some time unsure of what I was really looking for. A couple of years ago I ... Read the complete review

For those who thought FruityLoops was just another tracker, or loop sequencer, think again. I used to think the same. I use several very powerful bits of kit, including Cubase5 in conjunction with the mighty Pulsar studio-on-a-card, all of which have more facilities than FruityLoops in their left little fingers. Certainly, it is not the range of what FruityLoops can do that makes it so fantastic. Its virtual synths are basic, its effects average, its audio-editing facilities minimal. What makes it the bees-knees is its PHENOMENAL ease of use. Just try writing the same track in FruityLoops, and then using the Pulsar environment with Cubase as its sequencer. ... I have to say, from time to time I like to think of myself as the next Fatboy Slim. Not from eating too much but from the tunes I muster up on my Fruityloops 3 Music making package. For years now, I have tried a few of the top brand trackers and samplers for the PC market and soon get bored with it. However, Fruityloops keeps me coming back for more. What is it? Basically, it is a great studio for making dance music. You simply add samples and beats as well as synth sounding tunes together is a big mixer and produce a fantastic sound. If you have some idea about music, it does not really mater. All you need is timing, a slight tuneful bone somewhere ... Read the complete review

Somebody's keen, as version 3 isn't even shipping as I write this, but the previous versions were grrrreat! Fruity Loops started out pretty basic, but it's getting more and more useful features as the versions go by. Basically it's a sample sequencing tool, allowing you to make up a pattern like on a groovebox, but with your own samples (usually wav files). But it doesn't end there - you can have different patterns overlayed and organized nicely in the Loop window. Newer versions also support DirectX plugins, VST plugins, SimSynth sounds, MP3 encoding, Loop packaging (zipping up all your files for sending to someone), and ... Read the complete review
