Advantages: stops pop-up windows, small footprint, easy to use
Disadvantages: none
I love cruising the Web. It's brought me the world in a way I'd never be able to see it otherwise. True, there's nothing to beat personal experience and an actual physical visit to other countries, but for many of us, that's just not possible. I used to be bothered by banner ads all over the place, but have gotten to a point where I don't even notice them anymore. I guess the advertising agencies noticed this trend as well because they've managed to take advertising to the next, and doubly obnoxious level, the pop-up ad. There's one for the x-10 camera that I really hate. Even if it was the best and cheapest product in the world, I wouldn't buy it because it's on just about every web page I go to. Well, thanks to Panicware, Inc., I've been able to put a stop to these pop-up monsters and wanted to share it with you. The product is called pop-up stopper and I love it. It sits in the icon tray and does it's work without any fanfare or problems. There's a small, very satisfying noise it makes every time it stops a pop-up window from loading. Of course, there are times when you want a window to spawn, and for those times, just double click the icon and it's turned off until you double click again. No menus to go through, no buttons to turn on and off. Simple, neat, effective. It's also free, and according to the developer, it does not collect any information about the user. If you're interested, go to http://www.panicware.com, hit the download button and download pop up stopper. It's worth it. I'm sure advertisers will soon find a way to combat this effort at peace and quiet, but until then, thank you pop-up stopper.

- 13/07/01 hi Shazzy: That's one nice feature with this program. When I visit a site and hear the pop-up stopped and realize I needed it, I can turn it off with the click of the mouse. It really is a good program from what I've seen thus far (I've only been using it a month). |

- 13/07/01 I once installed something similar but I chucked it out again. Too many sites rely on pop-ups as part of their informative content. Take my surfing today. I've been on an online store where every product showed details in a pop-up. Then there was a health site where the navigation system was in the form of a pop-up. Then a site where I wanted to sign up for the newsletter. Yet another pop-up. Quite honestly, I think webmasters should just stop using them.
I can't see how pop-up advertising can be cost-effective when just about everybody I've ever spoken to hates them! |
