Advantages: Same quality as a DVD on a CD-Rom
Disadvantages: Takes a long time to encode the movie approx: 6-7 Hours
Well im surprised that this hasnt been mentioned so far. But then I relised that when MP3's first came out not many people knew about them either. OK we all know what a dvd is. Its a disk the size of a cd-rom but can hold about 4000MB compared to the standard 650MB. DVDs are commonly used to hold movies on them with very high quality. The only problem is if you dont want to get your most prized DVD getting scratched then the only solution is not to use it. We like the films so thats not gonna happen now is it. Anyway, some people seen this and decided that there has to be a way to compress the movie like what has happened to wav files into mp3. This new technology is called DivX ;) and yes that little cheeky wink is part of the name. DivX movies are like mp3s ALMOST the same quality as the original but not quite. The only problem is that it takes about a 400mhz computer with a good graphics card 16-32mb one, and a slight down point is that it will take about 6-7 hours to encode a full movie into a 650MB file. Which i think is still damn impressive. The programs that i use is DODsRIP to decode the encryped movie files off the DVD and onto your hard drive, then Da Rippak to shrink those files into a single 650mb movie. Oh yeah thats another thing you will need about 4-6GB free space for the dvd files and temporary files that are created during the encoding phase. Then to play these high quality movies on your computer you can use good old Windows Media Player with the DivX Codec(Compression/Decompression) and a suitable MP3 sound codec. All the information that you will need to make encode these movies should be available at www.divxdigest.com or if you cant find what you need there just type 'Divx' into any search engine you prefer, or copernic if you've read my other reviews, and bobs your uncle you have all the info ull ever need. I guarentee you if this gets the right kind of advertisment as mp3 did, it could become bigger
than mp3s. Who knows Napster could even take this on, aswell as movie producers to let users see the trailer of the film in very good quality unlike the standard Real media, which to be perfectly honest is terrible.

- 19/05/01 Good advice. The only problem is DVD has become so wide spread I don't think the industry isn't ready for a format change again. It could become popular for PC enthusiasts though. |
