GNOME is a simple desktop environment provided by many well known linux distributions. While KDE is more customizable and similar to Windows interface, GNOME offers simplicity instead of complexity. I tried KDE on ubuntu distro, but realized that latest version of does not allow you to put files on the desktop. And it is very difficult to create shortcuts altogather. So, I switched back to GNOME. Let's talk about its down side first. It is like vanilla version of any desktop environment. It is not very elegent, and does not look as professional as Windows or Mac. Gnome is an Grapical User Interface for linux operating systems, it is good at what it does and only second to KDE in some people's view. many applications are available that are compatible with Gnome and KDE and GTK+ apps can be run through Gnome with the correct crossover software installed (Runtimes), Gnome can be customised to handle networks and internet connections, monitor battery life on laptops, adjust audio settings. Linux unlike Windows allows the user to totally change the look of the desktop. Infact you can change teh desktop it's self. At the moment I'm running GNOME but there are others such as KDE as well as running the GNOME desktop manager I also need a Window manager (as the name suggests it says how the windows are displayed ) for this I am currently running Enlightenment but I could use SawFish, Blackbox or TWMN to name just three. So what does your average Linux desktop look like well really there isn't an average desktop Enlightenment (like all linux window managers) can be themed.
