Advantages: Speed, usability, clean interface.

Disadvantages: None. Honestly.

It had to happen. One day someone at Google was going to go: " Hey, guys, we need a chat program." And I'm glad that that they did, Gtalk is one of the best IM clients out there, and is widely used across the internet, and although it doesn't have the same features as MSN, such as video chat, or games, It makes up for this by being smaller, using smaller chat windows, having a more modern, and a cleaner interface.
Unlike MSN, which has ads splattered just about everywhere.
It seems minimalist, and actually, it is, but that's good because it doesn't take up as much system resources.
Google really managed to get it right this time, delivering a clean and enjoyable way to chat. Not to mention, that by signing into gmail you can talk via the built in gtalk client. A definite program to get, and well worth it, too.

Summary: Definitely get this. Now. If not sooner.
