Advantages: Quick, simple and efficient
Disadvantages: None
I must be one of the few people in the known universe not to have tried this web browser until now. I've been using the internet at home for around 10 years and until recently have been content with Internet Explorer (I.E) until my partner tried to install the latest version and it caused our laptop to crash. We thought we would have to put up with Mozilla Firefox which is ok but lacked something in my opinion..thats for another review.
What is Google Chrome
It's a web browser, similar to IE, Netscape or Mozilla that allows you surf the net and enjoy the delights of the world wide web. It's been developed by Google as an alternative to the big names and from what I hear is already making a big impact.
How do you get it?
Simple, I found the Google Chrome website by using Google (funnily enough) and within seconds was looking at the download page. OH was a little skeptical, what if it doesn't work? he argued. We'll delete it then I said, cant be that hard?! Anyway I took the plunge, clicked the mouse and walked away to brew a cuppa. By the time I returned the new shiny browser was sitting prettily on my screen waiting for me to use it.
What are the benefits?
Google Chrome doesn't have any annoying tool bars cluttering up the top of the page, there's the address bar and that's it which leaves a lot more room to view the web page you're looking at, which frankly is the whole point. I don't want a load of crap getting in the way when all I want to do is check my emails etc...
In addition to this, as with Firefox, you have the option of the browser remembering passwords for sites you use regularly such as hotmail etc... this wouldn't be practical or recommended if you have a lot of people using the same machine but for me and my partner it's a real bonus and saves a lot of time.
The best one was that all of our book marked sites from the previous browser were saved automatically, the thought of having to try and remember all the site addresses was a big bug bear for me and my partner so when we realised they were all there we were very happy.
What's it like to use?
In a word, fast! web pages are a lot quicker to upload than with IE or Firefox, even pages that are heavy with graphics and videos. It's uncluttered with no separate search box, I did wonder at first where I was supposed to type when I wanted to look for something then it dawned on me that the address bar does this for you, for instance type the name of a town or place and it suggests websites that might be useful.
Once you find a site you like you can bookmark it easily and quickly by clicking on the little star icon on the left hand side of the address bar.
I've been using Google Chrome for a few days now and am very happy with it. I'll only go back to IE or Firefox if this develops a problem but I cant see that happening anytime soon. I'd recommend this browser to anyone and will see if my boss will let us have it at work too!
