Handbrake is GNU sourced video and DVD, decrypting and converting software. I was moving to uni recently and was wanting to take my film collection and rather than take all my DVDs I was looking for a a program that would allow me to easily convert my films to .avi type files or similar and let me store them on an external hard drive. Handbrake is a software application that can convert almost any video format into almost any other. Handbrake is available for free download and is available for Mac, Windows and Linux. Handbrake can seem difficult to use however once you've mastered the basics its easy. You simply have to start it going then you can leave it to do its thing while you use your computer for something else. HandBrake is like the VLC of media conversion, it accepts virtually any multimedia file, and will output it as virtually any other! It was originally designed as a tool for converting (unencrypted) DVD's to a video playable on your computer, iPod, or virtually anything else. Recently though it's excellent framework has been extended to support virtually any video input, making it infinitely more useful. I love Handbrake and after using it with recommendation from a Cnet podcast I won't use anything else. Essentially Handbrake is a DVD backup program, taking your DVD (.vob, .ifo) files and putting into one single video to store onto your hard drive without the need to have the disc. Now maybe this is not too legal it is defiantly worth doing. Basically you need to backup your DVDs using a piece of software that gets rid of the annoying encryption and region protection.
