Advantages: Open sourced, can be edited, free to use

Disadvantages: Doesn't work

Handbrake is GNU sourced video and DVD, decrypting and converting software. I was moving to uni recently and was wanting to take my film collection and rather than take all my DVDs I was looking for a a program that would allow me to easily convert my films to .avi type files or similar and let me store them on an external hard drive.

It was at this point that I came across Handbrake. When I first heard about it I was hopeful. I had used Audacity in the past and found it to be one of the most impressive sound editing packages out there let alone amongst the free ones. I had also tried the GIMP and found it stunning.

After these Handbrake was a let down. The interface was not the most intuitive and I was unable to find any DVDs that it was able to copy. Every time I put a DVD in it came back and said that an error had occurred and that it couldn't read the disk.

Had it worked the list of things that it said it could do was impressive.

Summary: A disappointment after the likes of Audacity and the GIMP
