Advantages: Not too difficult to learn

Disadvantages: Slow, Massively time consuming, Losing relevance

HTML - Hypertext Markup Language, the driving force behind the development of the Internet as we know it, and a complete waste of time.

As a web designer, I'd be lying if I said you don't need to know how to edit HTML, but please, don't waste any time learning how to write HTML from scratch - you just don't need to know it.

My professional experience in web design has shown me that writing HTML is just another way to get in to the industry or to build a page, and that to really get motoring in web knowledge of Java, Javascript, ASP, or SQL will take you much further. Time spent learning HTML leaves less time to learn other, more profitable languages, which isn't a good thing.

Additionally, with the amount of good websites offer HTML tutorials, you can very easily find a site that will give you details of specific tasks that can be achieved with HTML as and when you actually need to know (which is very rare). The range of WYSIWYG HTML editors available on the common market means that fewer and fewer people are actually building sites in raw code, and rightly so.

Furthermore, the World Wide Web Consortium is moving coding standards away from HTML to XHTML, in advance of XML becoming the web coding standard. All of this means that HTML holds less and less weight on the modern Internet.

Whilst it's not massively difficult to learn, and is a strong starting point in IT for the non-technically minded in comparison to other coding standards, the buzz surrounding HTML and web development is beginning to fade. If you want to make money working in web design, don't waste your time here - learn XML or databasing for web usage.

So what would I advise you do? Go and get a trial copy of Macromedia's Dreamweaver, and learn how to build a site using that. Or Allaire HomeSite. Or Microsoft Frontpage. Or HoT MetaL Pro. Or...

A good read. I've tried learning HTML but I got stuck with columns etc but, like you say, it's quite easy to build a site without this knowledge now. Kay
