What is Limewire?

Limewire is a peer to peer file sharing site. Users download music, films and programs from other user's computers

How do I use it?

Simply download the software from limewire.com and you're up and running. Search for the song title, artist or film etc that you are looking for, choose the file you want to download, click one button and away you go!

Does it cost anything?

There are 2 versions, one is free to use and the other requires a fee of $34.95 for one year. I would recommend using the free version, everything you need is on there. The extra features that Limewire Pro offers are; faster downloads and faster bittorrent. While the free version can be a bit slow to start up, if you're in no hurry it gets there in the end!

Is it safe?

As with all peer to peer file sharing sites, caution must be used. There is a lot of spam files, where people have added a lot of different tags to spam files to ensure they show up on a lot of searches. Try to look at the file size for the item you're downloading, if the file seems to big or small, don't bother downloading it - it's probably spam.

Also, it is very important to ensure that you only allow access to the 'shared' part of your Limewire file. This means that people can only access items in there rather than other parts of your computer, perhaps containing sensitive information.

My Thoughts

The software is very easy to navigate and learn how to use. While not the most inspiring layout in the world, it does the job easily. Download speeds can vary, but where possible, the software downloads from several computers at once to minimise time taken.

All in all Limewire is a handy thing to have about, although I must tell you that while it is not illegal to have the software, downloading copyrighted items is illegal.
