Advantages: great choice of stuff to download
Disadvantages: virus risk, adult content
Limewire, a free peer-to-peer, p2p, file sharing site, with a lot of plus points, also a lot of negatives.
Limewire is a downloadable program that enables people to share music, video and other program files across the internet, for absolutely nothing. The program is free and, if you want, there is a faster, safer premium version for a cost, but if you are going to se this program, use the free one.
I'm sure you will have heard that this process is illegal and could make you end up paying out huge fines, on the amount of songs/things you download. If you are worried that this may, possibly, happen to you, I would advise that you do not use this program, but I use it none the less, and yes I know its wrong to.
The program itself is easy to use, the search bar is on the left hand side, with all of the necessary criteria; such as file type, name...., on it. The site finds all of the files with a match to this criteria, but BEWARE, some of these files are viruses, but as you use Limewire regularly, a will be able to determine which ones are viruses, normally the ones with lower case, and for music, no bit rate. I recommend this program, but it is very important to have a firewall and anti-virus software installed, and to scan all of the incoming files, due to this "threat" of viruses, but after using the program a couple of weeks, you should be able to work out what is what, if you have half a brain cell (I did it, so you should be able to!)
As far as download speeds go, it all depends on your internet connection, and mine is average at best, but still copes with all my download needs, music mainly.
One thing I must add is, well, adult content. There is a mountain of adult content on the videos section of the program, so if you have teenagers using Limewire, be sure to see what they download (most of the adult content has viruses on them anyway, I would imagine.)
Limewire, the fastest p2p site on the net, tempting isn't it?.....
Thanks for reading

- 07/06/09 Nice review, just a quick heads up for potential users though - The software itself *isn't* illegal, P2P software has many uses and is as legal as surfing the web - in fact BBC use it for their iPlayer downloading service!
Also, for those going to be downloading questionable content, ISP's & Copyright holders are more interested in those who are allowing for other people to download content (i.e. You download a track, and due to the nature of P2P people can then download it from you, known as seeding in bittorrent terms). In order to try to stop this make sure that:
a) You only run Limewire (or other P2P software) when you are actually downloading something (it's bad for the P2P "community", but protects you better).
b) disable sharing folders in limewire, and sharing of downloaded files - this still allows for you to download, but prevents anyone from downloading from you.
c) If possible turn encrypted connections on.
Follow those few of steps and you'll have virtually no chance of being suspect of suspicious activity - obviously no guarantees though!
Also you might want to check out Frostwire, essentially a free version of the premium limewire (possible because limewire is open source). Compatibility is with virtually any OS - Mac, Linux, Windows, Solaris etc. because it is a Java app. |
