Advantages: Fast and stable.

Disadvantages: Not user-friendly.

Linus Travolds, who is the founder of Linux, claimed years ago that Linux will take over Windows, a production from Microsoft Corporation which is founded by famous Bill Gates. However until now, seems like Windows still monopoly the OS world. I believe that there are a lot of people from research studies, engineering and even business hate Windows, ironically using it for their daily work. The reasons are, Windows is frequent-crashed system, and need expensive softwares to suit the daily work such as Microsoft Office.

I am doing PhD in Software Engineering. Personally I prefer Linux to Windows because of Linux is relatively fast and robust comparing to Windows (I think lots of people have the similar opinion as I do). I am using Linux to write Java and C codes, which are really faster in compilation and runtime. However I think the main reason Linux is still left behind by Windows is because of it is not that user-friendly and not graphical advanced operating system. In fact I think Linux also admits that because the latest version of Linux such as K-developement and RedHat have the Windows-look interface.

I think if Linux really wants to knock Windows off, they must really work hard to develop more softwares for Linux especially multimedia based softwares. Well I think that takes time. All I want to say is, Windows is really not suitable (this is my personal opinion) for working on coding and programming, but Linux really is really born for development and studies.

I agree. The world is used to easier graphical interfaces like Windows and quite often Linux and it's cousins simply look too hard to try and scare people off. I was forced into having a bash at Linux and once I got my head around it (and removed the knowledge of Windows-using from my brain temporarily) I realised what an excellent, adaptable, simple and stable OS Linux is. They do need to make it more similar to Windows though, to get Linux out of the realm of being the "geeks platform".
