I have both Lotus and Microsoft Office 2000 installed on my computer and use both, for different tasks. In my opinion there is very little difference for a home user between these 2 packages. Both offer a functional word processor, a spreadsheet and several other utilities, all with advanced features designed to make life easier. In my experience, Lotus is just preferable because it is simpler to use and not over engineered as is the Microsoft suite. However you could say that the reason that it is preferable because it isn't advanced and doesn't quite have all of the same advanced and helping features of Office. Let me give you an example: ...

Where did it all go wrong for Lotus? Well I suppose Bill Gates and Microsoft could have had a hand in it somewhere. I used to use Lotus regularly at work – Release Version 5, after the initial mastery, was a really good spreadsheet facility. Easy to use, good features and good compatibility. And then came Smartsuite and then Millenium suite.... What on earth is it about at all? They did their best to create something that would rival Microsoft Office, but I’m afraid that all they did was create a monster. Word v Wordpro, Access v Approach, and now Excel v Lotus – it really is no contest in my eyes, and I am glad to say that in both the jobs ...

I have Lotus 1-2-3 97, and not millennium, but there isn't anywhere to put about 97 so here goes. This is a fully featured spreadsheet, it has all the same features as other leading spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel. You can do all sorts of equations, and colour the cells, do different types of graphs e.g. pie charts, bar charts, line graphs etc. The only annoyance is it doesn't look as professional as Microsoft Excel, by this I mean the appearence of the toolbars etc. isn't as nice. ...
