Advantages: Arcade perfect replication of classic games, Availability of games on the Internet
Disadvantages: Potentially illegal
Emulation is huge in PC gaming - How else can you play all those classics of yesteryear? MAME (short for Multi Arcade Machine Emulator) is about the only way to play almost all the arcade classics from when you were young, without trying to buy the original arcade machines themselves. Whilst all the ROM's state that to legally play any of the games you must own an original copy of the ROM for the arcade machine. However, this is merely a formality, and is widely ignored by most MAME users. In addition to all of the old arcade games, MAME also supports emulations of a wide range of home console systems - too many to list from memory. Generally, the actual emulator is quite forgiving, although it is a lot easier to find inaccurate replicated ROM's on the web, and as a result find games that do not run like the original arcade games. In terms of the games available, finding ROM's requires a little hunting around, but once you find a good resource, you'll be set. All you need to do then is to prepare to lose a lot of sleep - trust me, you will.
