Advantages: many games, fun to play over the net
Disadvantages: some game could require a lot of time to be fully emulated
Mame (Multiple machine arcade emultator) is the best emulator on the net, as the name says it emulates many old arcade games, if you like you can now replay a games you played near 5 o 10 years ago on your pc with no cost at all.
At the moment the list of games supported by mame is composed by 3400 games(some of the games aren't fully functional so you must watch the mame site for the full list to see which of them is fully supported) (remember that many of them are clones, but the original games anyway are about 1800-1900 games), the last full version is the 0.60 but mame comes updated with beta version nearly once every month.
This emulator is being developed for many different system, from dos/windows to Linux, from Dreamcast to Xbox, for every system the number of emulated games is different so you must watch for your own system version to see which games are fully emulated.
If you like to use this emulator you need only the binary mame archive for your system and the "rom" of the game you like to play, if is emulated, you need only to put the rom in the mame rom directory, start the program and select the game you like to play from a list (it's better if you download a front end for windows and choose the game from there) and now you can play your favourite game in front of your pc monitor (if you note some slowness problems you need to set a fast framerate skip, this option is used for slow pc instead of drawing every frame of the games the games skip one or two frame for every cycle, for example if you select 1 the game will skip 1 frame every 2, if you select 2 it will skip 2 every 3 and so on).
If you would like to play this emulator over the net, for the windows version you can download the kaillera client from www.kaillera.com, this is a special client that allows you to play mame on the net, there are server made for the online game, or you can start your own personal server and give access to your
friends for play only with them.
I have tried online games and even if mame is not studied for online games the playability is not bad, but all depends from your/opponent connection.
