Advantages: Free, loads of nifty shortcuts, skinable and easy to customize

Disadvantages: -, -, -

Microsoft Internet Explorer is one of the best and most widly used internet browsers on the market.
Its main success is due to its brilliant functionality and ease of use, plus its FREE!
However there are other browsers available free of charge, which are just as functional and easy to use, such as Netscape Navigator.

At the end of the day its all down to what browser you like and are comfortable using.

I've tried both Microsoft Internet Explorer (now on version 5.5) and netscape navigator.

I prefer to use Microsft internet browser as I think its got a slight edge over Netscape navigator.
However which browser you use is really down to your preferences, but most of you reading this will be using some version of microsoft internet explorer.
If you haven't got the latest version I recommend that you get it.

Download it (www.microsoft.com) or get it on a free ISP disk (or from a computer magazine cover disk)

I like Internet Explorer for the nifty little features it offers and the vast range of shortcuts and tricks:

Heres a few Tips, Tricks and Shortcuts that will make using IE 5.5 easier...

Tip 1: The standard toolbar can be customized to make buttons smaller, remove buttons, control the layout etc.
To customize your toolbar right click it anywhere where there is some blank grey area. A menu should appear > Click "Customize"

A dialogue box will appear letting you change a range of things you may have not known you could change!

Tip 2:
This is a good trick for when you want to quickly type a address into the adress bar, but don't want to use the mouse to click on it.
Simply use this short-cut:
Alt + D
This will highlight the address bar.
You can now type in the address bar without having even touch your mouse.

Tip 3: While in full screen mode right click the tool bar and select auto hide.
This will give you the who
le screen for the webpage and no toolbars.
To see the toolbar move your mouse cursor up to the top of the screen.
The toolbar will appear...

Tip 4: Quick Jump!
To go forward a webpage press Alt + RightArrow
To go back a webpage press Alt + LeftArrow

Tip 5: The built-in search thingy shortcut:
The search tool thingy that comes with I.E. 5.5 can be quickly opened by pressing Ctrl + E

Tip 6: Quick Scrolling of long webpages.
Rather than scrolling with the mouse simply press the spacebar!
It will scroll down in big junks (each time you press it!).

Tip 7: Favourites menu shortcut:
If your on a webpage you want to add to your favourties folder simply type
Ctrl + D

Tip 8: The F11 key is a full screen view toggle. Press it to go in and out of full screen browser mode...

I think nicoli's 'Not usefull' Rating was unfair. This was a very helpful Op. Thankyou.

Try Opera, also free but a far superior browser in every aspect

I have found an unfortunate tendency for Internet Explorer to crash, usually taking the entire computer with it. I far prefer Opera (http://www.operasoftware .com), which tends to crash less often. Also, when it does crash, it will open next time with the same windows as when it crashed (it gives you the option to save the web addresses in windows when shutting down as well), and is less likely to take windows with it. It also has F11 for full screen mode, and lots of useful features IE has never had, yet is a much smaller and faster browser. If you pay for Opera, the banners disappear.
